I went to the USCG Lake Worth FL open house held on Saturday, 17 May 08. Everyone was super nice. Great little station. The GC Auxiliary was out in force, getting along great with the Active Duty people. Great station. My camera died during the Helicopter display, when the yanked a swimmer out of the water

I think that's all of 'em. Multiple individual topics merged.

What is with all the guns???

isuhawkeye

the coast guard does have guns.....

SARMedTech

And lots of them, what with one of their primary duties being law enforcement and drug interdiction.

They ain't the Lighthouse Service anymore.

Well I am trying to find the Manual reference.......Give me time

CadetProgramGuy

ok E.4.b of the CG Aux Operations Manual states  (COMDTINST M16798.3E).....

Auxiliarists may not be used to exercise general law enforcement or military authority. The Coast Guard unit involved, however, may take all appropriate law enforcement action, notwithstanding the presence of Auxiliarists. In no event may any Auxiliarist carry firearms or be made a member of any actual boarding party deployed during law enforcement action. Auxiliarists may act as interpreters for boarding parties once the situation is deemed low risk by the Boarding officer.

While I cannot find anything on the restriction on NOT manning the boat weapons, My opinion is that manning the weapon is part of a Law Enforcement activity, and cannot me done.

With that said I could easily change my stance on this.......

Earhart1971

That sounds right, he did say he manned the boats, and was just like a regular coastie, but I could understand the restriction on manning the M-60 and doing boarding in a high risk situation. Liability, and not putting an Aux in danger, yada, yada, that makes sense.

SAR-EMT1

However... if I as an Auxilliarist am on patrol with the Coast Guard, and we get shot at, I will grab the nearest weapon and return fire. (long shot but i can hope)
