Now I see... they are the CEEPEES!

Sorry had to steal from the SEABEES!

Flyer

Please, if you don't know who or what they are, don't insult them.

Thank you Jersey Cadet. Did you enjoy your time at Silver Flag?

PHall,

Of course I do know who - not what - they are and what they have done. Much more than you do. Calling them "what" is a much worse insult than what I said. They were not / are not a "thing" to call them so.

I lived with my fair share of good-natured ribbing when I was a cook in the Air Force. (Hash slinger, burger flipper, Death From Within!)

I could understand calling a chef a "Hash Slinger," "Burger Flipper," and even "Death From Within."  ;D

I cannot understand why anyone would call a chef "Cow Killer." Chefs do not kill cows!  :P

I doubt that, but then I had 31-1/2 years to study them too.  Flown a lot of them to a lot of places too.

Luis R. Ramos

Ok,

I will accept that you know them better than I do. I sincerely hope that no harm came during any of your missions...

And I can't understand why anyone would call a military cook a chef.

Ok David-

Modifying my question.

I still cannot understand why military cooks are called "cow killers." The cow is already dead when it reaches them!

I bet, David, that you still cannot answer it! ;D

Me neither... though some military cooks later on in their careers will wind up going to a culinary school like Culinary Institute of America. Doesn't make them chefs, though.

Maybe once upon a time in the old west the cook had the additional duty.  Or maybe it is just a funny name someone created to poke fun at the cooks who seemed to try to kill the cow all over again by cooking the steaks with high heat for an overly prolonged period of time until all of their life's juices were long gone.  Heck, I don't know.

They must have a taste-removing machine in the Pacific Dining Room Captain Louis A. Zamperini Dining Facility in Kwajalein... in the three years I was there I could hardly taste anything their 'chefs' skilfully prepared. (Wha'kine pakalolo dey smokin', brah?) When I got back to the real world I had to undergo 'taste bud therapy' so I could enjoy fresh food again!  ;D
