Interestingly, I started using our wing provided email address for all my official press releases, which is a wing.cap.gov designated address.

Should CAP as a policy consider using a wing.cap.org type address versus a .gov address because it causes some confusion as to our true identity ???.  For example on one of my recent press releases for the local "Wreaths Across America" ceremony, the reporter who called me seemed to be under the impression that I was a full time paid government employee in public relations and was a bit taken back when I told the reporter that I wouldn't be able to get him an immediate answer or interview, since I was at my normal daytime paying job.  I went on to explain very briefly to the reporter that we were all unpaid volunteers, etc.

They should do some research about the organization before they conduct an interview.

It causes zero confusion regarding our identity, in fact, it actually properly defines it.

Hey, if *you* don't like using your mawg.cap.gov email address, because you find that people are confused, *you* can stop using it.

Otherwise, yes, I agree. It actually properly defines it.

Hmm, isn't a "government" internet ID mean one is in a government organization e.g. local, county, state, federal, versus a non profit organization ???   Again from a public relations standpoint (especially at the squadron level) we aren't the "government" and this was not a very big misunderstanding once explained BUT now it gives me pause as to whether to use this internet email address for anything external, especially with the news media :-\.

However, CAPR 110-1 "Internet Operations", doesn't address the use of an ORG designation, only use of the cap.gov, which seems to be the official posture of what to use.

If the government didn't want us using the .gov address for official business, they wouldn't have assigned it to us in the 1st place.

If anyone had taken the time to check rather than just post useless information, you would make the magic discovery that CAP.ORG is already in use by the College of American Pathologtists.

Geeez RM, you had to really reach for that one.  Many people outside of CAP think the samething the reporter did.  The .gov thing had nothing to do with it.  People were making the same mistake before there was an internet.

Yet you choose to pretend it is.

Non-issue IMHO.  However, I am perplexed that cap.gov redirects to www.gocivilairpatrol.com instead of a .org.  Are we selling something?   :o

I think it's supposed to be like goarmy.com.

...except that goarmy.com doesn't redirect to army.mil.  gocivilairpatrol.com shouldn't redirect to cap.gov.

The whole .com for commercial activities, .org for "non-profits", .net for hardware manufacture/providers went out with button shoes.

A Long Time Ago. It actually never even was.

Civil Air Patrol's non-profit status is irrelevant. It is a governmental organization by virtue that the government provides part of our governance. We're not an NGO.

You may have noticed in one of the replies above that cap.org has already been taken.
Kinda hard to use something that is not available...

I think he's referring to gocivilairpatrol.org, not cap.org.

In Florida Wing, our websites and wing email addresses use the .us domain.

The CyBorg is destroyed

Great Bog in Devon, RM, another example of your "we are the CIVIL Air Patrol".... ::)

It sounds like you are the one confused about our "identity," not the public.

I worked an event this weekend where I had extensive interaction with the public.  Only one, a former Marine, questioned me about "what is the Civil Air Patrol?"  I told him, "we are the volunteer Auxiliary of the United States Air Force."  He said, "thanks for volunteering" and went on his way.  It's not that complicated!

Personally, I think we should be able to have our website be cap.aetc.af.mil...the British Air Training Corps uses www.raf.mod.uk/cadets.

Groups and wings use the.gov domain.  It's not that complicated!
