I recently moved, and am in the process of checking out a few local squadrons. Since I have not decided who to join yet and have not transferred, I still technically belong to my old unit. I emailed the personnel officer in my old unit asking for my 201 file, so that I can go through it and ensure it is correct before presenting it to my new unit. I have yet to hear back, but wanted to make sure it was within my rights to ask for the file.

I tried looking in CAPR 39-2 and 10-2, and did not find what I'm looking for...

Any help here would be appreciated.

You are not, however you could request a copy.

Member records are retained at the squadron of record for a given member until such time as a member transfers, at which time they can either be hand-carried by the member or sent directly from unit staff to unit staff.

I asked for mine, took it home and then gave them back the copy. Its basically yours and you can request it to make sure its up to date.

Fair enough.  When he transfers.  It says nothing about when he's shopping.  If there are discrepancies in the file, the unit CC or personnel officer needs to be aware of the changes being made.  Members are not simply allowed to edit their histories at will.

What about negative PA's that might be conveniently "lost' enroute?

+1, you are correct. The originals stay with the unit, you can have the copies, but the file does not leave the unit, until you transfer or terminate, in which time the unit hangs on to it until destroyed.

If you transfer, retire, resign or fail to renew you are permitted to request the originals.  Those who are terminated or non-renewed for cause may receive copies only however, as spelled out quite explicitly in CAPR 39-2 SEC. B 1-8.

If you're smart, you would retain a "Personal" copy of your files at your home. Any original documents, certificates, or other items should be in your possession-The copies go to the squadron.   That way if something is lost or not documented in the "Official" file, you are covered.

In my opinion, this should be amended to state that originals generated by the unit stay in the unit files.  There is no way that I'm giving the squadron my original ECI-13 certificate or first aid card (among others).

That is why I schedule the members in my squadron for records check on their anniversary date every year, Admin being one of my many jobs.
