I recently discovered that Walmart converted 16MM to DVD format. I decided to take a chance and have one of my copies of a CAP movie converted. It took them 5 weeks but when I got it back it turned out great. I will be taking the rest of them and doing the same. I am going to convert them all and make a DVD available at a later date. It was great watching the movie without worrying about the projector.

Sorry, I don't even have an idea what 16mm looks like, or what it was filmed on. That's probably before my mother's time or something.

I'm so young.

Please let us know as soon as you can get copies made. I would be real interested.

Jim,

What did WAL-Mart charge to convert to DVD? I had a professional film lab convert two CAP films (Young Ambassadors and another one about early 1970s special activities), and it was approximately $125 each! I have several more to convert when I can afford it.

BTW, I duped the above DVD for you. I'll mail it off to you eventually....

What titles did you convert?

They charged $90. I will be getting more done. I believe it was Young ambassadors.

How many of the old 16mm CAP films are floating around? Someone told me that the Air Force Film Library had eight different titles from the 50's through 70's. Don't know how true that is, but I remember at least four

There are quite a few, though I seem to have lost the catalog that I had. Our squadron had a film of a CAP cadet flying training event that we scanned into DVD. It had a few glitches, but it was interesting to see. Nothing squadron specific, though.

Any CAP movie made before 2000 is housed in the DoD depository.  the "DVIDS" system allows CAP members to search for cap movies, they then mail them to you.  Google DVIDS, DoD and go from there.

DON'T waste your money on converting CAP movies that are already converted.  Wish you would have asked here first!

I'm assuming that you mean any movie sponsored by NHQ.... there have probably been thousands of films/videos made of CAP over the years at the squadron or wing level that I bet are not included.  I wouldn't even put money on that place having all national-made movies.....

Through the kindness of a friend, I managed to pick up a couple 16mm films on CAP when the AF film library closed at Norton AFB, CA. Although several people have mentioned VHS (and now DVD) versions, I've never seen any in the AF library. Let's face it, these CAP films were old when the library closed.

A quick search of DVIDS just now turned up six modern films on CAP (Katrina, Wreaths Across America, etc.), but none of the historical films we've been talking about. These are long out of circulation, so sharing DVD copies will help preserve a bit of our heritage.

I appreciate the help and suggestions. I tried to do some looking myself as well. I will be going tomorrow to drop another off. They will eventually be made available.

I met with DVIDS today at the National Association of Broadcasters show.  Media is now downloadable to those who have a DVIDS membership (it's free, just sign up at their website).  Videos can be made available on websites, modified, edited, re-voiced, or provided by DVIDS in an alternate digital format (standard download format is high-def MPEG4), as long as attribution is made to DoD.
