HR 1178 still stuck in committee:

May 13, 2009: Received in the Senate and Read twice and referred to the Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs.


In other words - stuck in this committee.  The chair of this particular committee is Joseph Lieberman.  Perhaps someone at the CT Wing level can push him to introduce the bill.  If not, it will likely die.

Maybe you guys want to go up the chain and ask your Wing CC to make a call?

CT Wing members just finished writing to their state senators and representatives because the governor cut us out of the budget.  I don't know how much everyone is going to want to break out the stationary again.

HR 1178 is only the House of Representatives number for it.  They have already passed the bill.  In the Senate is is known as S.704.

Very true, although I would suggest that hearing from people who can actually vote for (or against) them carry the most weight. Obviously that shouldn't stop anyone from dropping a senator or representative a note about a bill or issue.

Probably best to work out our issues/concerns with the USAF chain of command rather than bringing congress into this.  I'm glad this bill got referred back to committee  -- that's where it belongs

Frankly, With an entire national paid staff along with all those commander appoint advisors, there's absolutely no reason why they/we shouldn't have been talking with the USAF (via the CAP-USAF commander & his staff) about what  they think (or shall we say what their "fantasies" are) about CAP potential capabilities to support homeland security & what studies can be done by the USAF to validate CAP's "capabilities" & "readiness".   

My opinion is first we should be looking at how we can further support the USAF (to include ground type support via VSAF & a program similiar to the USCG Aux's "Watch Stander" program ), without going out of department so to speak.  Lets see how much resources we really have to sustain support for long periods of time.  Perhaps the USAF currently is the "honest broker" on what CAP is really capable of doing on a sustained basis, versus the "fantasy" view of some in CAP     I don't think end runs to congress is the way to go

Not an end run around the Air Force.  This was meant to see what we can do for the United States Government.  We owe everything to Congress and are working for the American people, not the Air Force only.  Don't forget we are not even the "Air Force Auxiliary" half the time.   

How do you propose we further support the Air Force.  We are their "auxiliary", you would think they would tell us how to support them.

This bill deserves a chance, and we need to learn what other government officials believe we (as CAP) can do for the country. 

I hate to say it, but everything changed 8 years ago.  We need to change with the times, if that means working more DHS missions than Air Force missions, so be it.
