I presume your computer did not come with Microsoft Office?

If not, sounds like you want free word processing.  I would suggest Open Office available here http://www.openoffice.org.

Software for what?
Civil air patrol

What specifically do you need software for? Are you looking for free anti viral software? Word processing? Free games? Flight Simulators? Software related to Search and Rescue, such as personnal tracking applications? Software related to aerospace education?

You can't just say 'Civil Air Patrol software' and expect much in the way of a reply.

I would take advantage of the free AVG offered on E Services.. Other than that, you need to be more specific.

SIMS is probably the greatest free application ever contrived when it comes to CAP, but as a young cadet you would have little to no use for it..

For making business cards and such nothing beats Microsoft Office, and I bet your computer came with a trial version. Its not cheap when you need to buy the full version.. Worth it, though..

Anywho, you need to be more specific about what you are looking for. You would probably get more responses to your posts if you didn't ask such open ended questions..

If you would like to purchase inexpensive software, try your local College bookstore, they usually have academic versions which are fully functional but at about 50% of the regular price.

Download Google Earth as well.  Can't beat the price and they just launched a new version.  Add in some Sectional Charts and CAP grid overlays for good measure.
Good luck and good hunting,

There is some free, but it requires the internet all the time at broadband speeds.  Most of it is in Google Earth.

1.  There are topography overlays for google earth
2.  Sectionals are there
3.  CAP Grids are there
4.  I don't know about Model Rocketry software
5.  There is a flight simulator in Google Earth.

This is an unashamed cross post because it relates directly to the topic.

The best and most complete conventional grids for Google Earth that I have found are available here:
http://msocs.org/google_earth/
Credit goes to Major Hector Perez of FL Wing on that one.

If you're doing grids, you'll probably want them on a sectional chart (at least someday).  Here's information on how to do that in Google Earth:
http://www.wikihow.com/Overlay-Sectional-Aeronautical-Charts-in-Google-Earth

Of course, I'm also partial to the GridFinder application:
http://www.cap-es.net/Gridfinder/gridfind.html
It also has the associated Sectional charts printed with grid lines in .pdf format.
Good luck and good hunting,
