OK,

So, I have another thread where we're looking at the implications of state law and "if" it impacts the wear of PPE like helmets.

While looking through CAPTALK I see where this issue was lightly touched on here:
http://captalk.net/index.php?topic=5016.0.  It looks like that in PAWG that Wilderness SAR requires helmets and eye protection.

If we take a note from the FEMA US&R teams they are obvisouly wearing helmets for their URBAN activities http://www.matf.org/gallery/canine06/IMG_0058

My Wing ES Officer who I know is trolling on here and I are curious what OTHER wings are doing.   Are we at a place where we can set a point for an "approved" brand of helmet for standardization (even if by wing) vs. a "required" clothing piece forcing members to buy?  Or are we behind the times and other wings are already requiring helmets?

I would recommend specifying compliance with a standard, i.e. ANSI or OSHA, not specifying an 'approved' brand.  Standardize style and color, i.e. front bill, neon purple, and note a couple that are known to meet the standards, but qualify it with something indicating you are not endorsing any particular brand. I would also note anything NOT permitted, i.e. NFL team helmets, batter's helmets, ad nauseum.

I have participated in ES within 2 wings.  In both wings we were told to refer to the CAP Manuals/Regulations.  In California, we fall under the regulations of CAL-OSHA.  They require specific helmets (Chinstraps, Suspension, Crush Resistance....).  Each state has different requirements.  In CAWG, I called CAL-OSHA who refereed me to the person within their organization who handles volunteer SAR organizations.  He then sent me a list of required items for anyone participating in a "Volunteer Search and Rescue Operation".  Hope it helps.

I said it in the other thread, but be aware that "plastic" safety helmets do come with expiration dates on them and that it would be wise to make sure that the ones you're using are still good.

Hey Paul, can you get me a copy of that list that you got?  I'd like to take a look.
