When wearing a field jacket, the 39-1 says SM/Cadet offers need "wear embroidered grade insignia on ultramarine blue
background on the epaulet" (Page 19, Chapter 2, CAPM 29-1).

But, both Hock and Vanguard have these: http://www.thehock.com/shop/?keywords=gortex&match_criteria=all&cart=601759
Are these an alternative to embroidering insignia?

Just need some clarification; my father needs a field jacket soon for encampment  ;) :-\ :o

Field jackets wear grade sewn on the epaulets. The slides go on the front of the gortex jacket. Two different beasts.

There is something wrong with your link, but I think I know what you are talking about.

No. The sleeves are for the front tab on the ECWCS parka, for the  Field Jacket you need to sew cloth rank directly onto the epaulets of the field jacket, per 39-1.

If he is wearing an M-65 Field Jacket (the one with the epaulets and top pockets) he'll need both of the following:

His grade insignia like this:

CAP Insignia like this:

If he has a goretex parka he'll need something like this:

Where can he/we buy the gortex parka?

I personally would stick to ebay or go with hyvat, hyvat is just as good as gore-tex with a 3rd of the price

On a related note...

Would a cadet use this slide with his or her pin on rank?

f. Gortex parka. Effective 20 November 2006, the Air Force authorized the
wear of the Gortex parka for CAP members. This outergarment provides maximum
protection from the elements and is now authorized for all members wearing the BDU
uniform. This garment will be worn with an ultramarine blue embroidered device on the
front tab. Cadet and senior member officers will wear the device with embroidered
grade insignia. Cadet and senior member NCOs will wear the device with the
embroidered CAP and metal grade insignia.

I have a hyvat parka, its acutally an 'improved rain parka' which consists of the shell (outer layer) only.  It does have the buttons to attach a field jacket liner.

I'm in Florida so it's great for the rainy season, and converts easily as described above for occasional activites up North.

And yes, you can usually get them for a song on ebay.

As a fellow Floridian, is it suitable as-is for winters down here? I'm looking at buying one, but I don't forsee leaving FL any time soon in the winter...

I say GET IT!  I got mine a couple of years ago, I took the family to Disney that December and it was rainy and unseasonably cold.  I happened to have the parka in my trunk, and even without a liner, it was a lifesaver.

For hot and rainy days, there are zippers in the armpits that allow ventilation, so you don't get the "sauna effect" like the old rubberized rain parkas.

If you get one surplus, it's likely that the weatherproofing tape on the seams will be coming off.  If so, peel it all off, and buy some waterproofing seam-seal compound from Target or Wal-mart for about $5.

I've got the M-65 field jacket.  Any idea how far up on the epaulets - from the sleeve -- the rank goes?  (Not sure where to place my butter bars on the eps) Thanks!!!!!

Hey, the Army brought them back. From the looks of it, the next Army utility will probably have the same option.

The Air Force got rid of theirs when they went to the ABU, not that anybody outside of AETC was wearing field jackets anyway.
The goretex parka is pretty much the standard outer wear for the Air Force when wearing BDU's and ABU's.

I remember those days. Remember when I bought my first Gore-Tex. Also remember wearing my field jacket half the time after that, it was quieter.  Although, with the old "bear suit" jacket under it, the Gore-Tex did work pretty well at 20 below.
