Hey so I was wondering why e-services or someone hasnt tried the idea of integrating email into our services as well.  I know we have the email and phone roster stuff but like the military has the joe.snuff@us.army.mil and the Air Forces has them same I wonder if it could be possible to be able to do that as well.

Why you may ask?  I know looking through the other day and trying to figure out who sent me a email from the SQD was difficult when it was SARKING2k8@somethingcrazy.com and then there was no signature or anything.  Plus it would look alot more official as well I would think.

JC004

you can get @xxwg.cap.gov if your wing gives it

hatentx

eh didnt know.  lol I think it would make things seem more professional and orderly though but thats just me.  I have two different military email accounts so who knows.

An @cap.af.mil address would be pretty cool.  Tap into AF Portal.  >:D

...And CAP Talk could require a valid @cap.af.mil address for member verification.  >:D

Or we could ask for CAP ID's to check for membership, but unless you were able to access CAPWatch on a naitonal level, that would prove impossible.

I actually like better.  the only difficult part is with the AF portal is it is like AKO where you have to re registrar ever 180 days and pick a 45 letter sentence for your password that cant contain any of your lost 400 passwords.  Never mind I cant get my joes to remember their password I doubt that I can get a younger cadet to remember all of that password

I can't but I assume somebody can.  I was thinking about having the username be CAPID since you can have a different display name.

[on a more serious note]I think that would qualify as misuse of the CAPWATCH database, and I would be personally against anyone using it for their own personal reasons.

CAPWATCH database should be used for "official use only" and not some sort of "background check" for potential CAPTalk candidates.  I would consider anyone who has the ability to check those things and did to be misusing their authority.

There are reasons that the general membership can't just go poking around for anyone in the database.

that's great for members but what about potential members?  when I fist thought about joining CAP I went to captalk to learn what I could before I made the decision.

And that's one of the reasons that it's not a policy of CAPTalk to restrict membership to members of CAP.  So there's no need to use CAPWATCH, membership card scans or any other sort of vetting process.

Now back to productive topic at hand.

Administering a mail system on this scale would require a team of full-time administrators, and the hosting costs would be astronomical.  Its a business CAP doesn't want to be in.

The only way I think it would even be feasible would be if we got Google to donate the services through their domain-hosting program.

the air force already does this why can't we piggy back off of them?

Google can do it for free for non-profit organizations.  It's part of an online service called GoogleApps (www.google.com/a).  IIRC, that's how WIWG does it for their e-mail addresses (XXXX@wiwg.cap.gov).  It's also something I'm checking into once my squadron website's up and running.

For better or worse, its been made clear we are not a military service, therefore a .mil domain name is inappropriate.

Also, while the USAF is doing it for their own people, its not free (nothing is), and adding 55+k emails, pls all the lists and other administration needed would require funding from somewhere.

They offer the service free, but not that administration.

Also, they do not have moderated lists and other important features available on most cheap, basic domain hosting plans.

^ Yes they do.

I have been toying with this for a while.  You can set up "groups" that can only be posted to by select people.  And anyone not on that list can either have their emails directed to the circular file or to the inbox of the admin.

I like google apps quite a bit for the email services, calendar, and intranet sites.  However the external site applications are lacking.

Florida wing recently did name@flwg.us email accounts for everyone--guess what? Not many people use it. I receive wing emails at this address, but my unit uses a yahoo group system and works just fine. Most members already have several emails--and cadets don't need a CAP based email and some of the cadets dont even have emails to begin with. Sounds like overkill to me--better off using this effort on something else.
