I just read on the SIMS forum page that the developer is in contact with Natl HQ/IT and they are developing an upload capability for SIMS to the Nat'l database! 

Up until now this has been the biggest drawback to using the program because you had to enter information twice, SIMS and MIMS.

I see this as being either a great feature or an incredible security hole.

One reason I like SIMS is that it always assumes NHQ is the authoritative database for anything NHQ tracks, therefore a fat-finger won't mess with the "real" records, or accidentally promote someone.

Any idea what fields / features they are considering?

No nothing, I got the post update from Dennis about this.  It has always been a sticking point with me.

I wanted to pass along an update on the Squadron Information Management System.  The developer has announced that he is in contact with National MIS to make SIMS uploadable to the National database.

Access, in all its iterations, is the Microsoft database program. It is not downloadable for free, unless you are doing it illegally.

But you can get a 60-day trial, which is nice.

It does work on 2007, but you have to hide the ribbon on some screens so that you can view all of the information.  It's no big deal because he has written all the radio buttons you need into the program.

But, if someone has the highest end developer version, a runtime module can be distributed with program, so the end user doesn't need to have Access on their computer. The runtime will let you run SIMS (or any Access program) while not letting you use it for anything except running the program.

Somebody ought to send a copy to Dennis then, being that this is the major stumbling block for the application.  Maybe NHQ needs one for the CAPWATCH files too?

Ideally SIMS should be a stand alone application that would negate the need for Access.

I don't know if access to Access (ha!  ) is that big of a deal.  I think all the CAP laptops come with it pre-loaded; ours did.  That's where we run SIMS from anyways.  A run-stand-alone version would be cool, though.

and badger bob has office pro available for VERY VERY decent prices, as long as it is for CAP use

If you have any type of College ID, you can get some of these programs for a very low cost compared to the store price through local college bookstores or educational websites.  P.S. MS Office is available through the exchange system for about $79. and unlike the student edition it's upgradable.
