Have any units, as units, filed to participate in the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC)?  I'm looking at the paperwork now.  The deadline is Feb 8th and there's a lot of documentation to produce.

They ask for things like financial statements and IRS 990s.  Since the unit doesn't file its own 990s and is technically part of a larger "group return/filing" to the IRS, would we include National's IRS Form 990s?  I don't want them thinking that our unit is a $30M+ yearly operation.

The Senior Squadron in our area do it every year for the last 3 I think. Last year we did real good (I believe close to 3k). I thought i heard them say something about a seperate 990, but I'll have to ask.

One thing on it. We are lucky to be surrounded by a couple military bases. Each of them holds CFC Fairs every year. If your area has something similar make sure you get out there and put up a table. Take some flyers and business cards and make sure to put your CFC number on those cards!

I looked into it WIWASC, but it looked like it got pretty complicated, pretty quickly.

Quick question, what is the Combined Federal Campaign?

Think United Way, except oriented towards the military establishment.

All federal employees can contribute to CFC,  not just the military.

There is a lot of paperwork to become a listed organization, and much of it has to be resubmitted every year.  Another group I'm with is listed, but unfortunately, so are a couple of hundred others in our zone.

If you don't mind the paperwork, it's a good way for the members or friends of your unit can donate to the squadron.
Some pointers: 1.  If your unit has a separate E.I.N. (Tax ID)  get rid of it.  Use the CAP EIN.  You won't need to worry about filing a Form 990.  2.  Make sure you keep a record of the donation if it is directly deposited to the "Wing Banker" account.

Let me preface this with I give a great deal to charity.  Having said that, I'm not a fan of CFC.

During my military career, we were forced to give to CFC.  Each unit had a CFC officer who would track who had given and who had not.  The list was sent to the commander/1st sgt/sgt maj for pressure to be brought on the individual.  If you didn't play, your career was in the tank.  I know that the courts have stopped that practice, but that's the only reason.

The reason that CFC is still in existence is because of the remaining perception that if you don't give, you'll be marked.  Even in the government civilian world, we're pressured to give.  It is subtle, but real.

I'd hate to see CAP a part of that.
