While reading Air Force Times, I came across an article about the old Air Force comic book Steve Canyon.  In the article was a picture of the cover of one of the editions of Steve Canyon.  In this edition, CAP is featured.  In the lower left-hand corner of the cover is the CAP propeller symbol.  In the lower right-hand corner it says: "A "Mock Raid" - and the Civil Air Patrol was invited... but somebody crashed the party with real bullets!"

The subtitle to the print of the edition's cover states: "Protagonist Steve Canyon was like a spokesman for the Air Force during the comic's 41-year run."

It's nice to see CAP was featured in such a popular comic book.  I wonder what the story was for this issue?  Has anyone ever read it?  It looks like it was an edition from the 1960's.

Actually, the price (10 cents) and the F-80's and H-46 on the cover put it more like late 50's.

My mistake!

Just took a second look, and the helicopter is an H-19!

Even more interesting was the nickname a New Jersey wing commander got due to her resemblance to a Steve Canyon character, The Dragon Lady.

Here are some other ones as well. There is 1 more that I have not scanned yet. I have all of them in my private collection and scan them and put them in PDF format. I will try to ge the other cover scanned. You can buy these on ebay of course for anywhere between $10 to $50 depending on the condition.

I know its hard to believe, having recently been infested with "Corporate" cockroaches, but CAP was once the "Glory" outfit of the Air Force.  People were excited about CAP volunteers flying out over the Gulf and the Atlantic to fight U-Boats from small private planes, and there was a certain mistique about the CAP that attracted tons of cadets.

Hey, John.  Are you sure they aren't P-80s?

Not with the red stripe on the National insignia.  That came out AFTER the USAF became a separate service.  The "P" got changed to "F" pretty much on the same general order that outlawed "Crushed caps."

You might be right.  I thought the longer nose was simply the artist's rendering, but on a third look, they have the longer canopy that suggests a 2-seat aircraft.

But... the F-94 Starfire still didn't make it into the 1960's, so my point that the comic was from the late 50's is still valid.  Also, comics went up in price to 12 cents during the Kennedy Administration!

Greetings:

I figured I would use the old thread since it still applied. There is actually a statue of Steve Canyon in Idaho Springs, Colorado.

The "Smiling Jack" comic strip throughout World War II featured CAP. The cartoonist Zack Mosley was even the Florida Wing Commander for a period. Mosleys daugter, Jill has many of his comics on sale online at http://www.smilinjackart.com/sales.htm Including a book that is listed in the Historians PD track.
"Smiling Jack" had several characters that were involved in CAP including cadets.

Steve Canyon was most popular as a newspaper comic than as a comic book. There was quite a bit of CAP in the features including a neice who was a cadet. CAP was also mentioned on the Bob Cummings Show aka "Love That Bob" where Dwayne Hickman again a nephew, was a cadet.

For info...

Bob Cummings was a CAP member.  He was a charter member of CAWG Sq 35 during WWII.
