Col. William S. Bernfeld

Middle Eastern Region

Smyrna, DE - William "Ziggy" Bernfeld, age 67, of Smyrna, DE, formerly of Yorktown Heights, NY, passed away on Monday, February 26, after a long struggle with chronic lung disease.

Ziggy was born on September 22, 1950, in Port Chester, NY, to Sonya Azorsky and the late Arnold Bernfeld. He graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army. He went on to earn an MBA from the University at Albany and an MS in Accounting from Pace University. In 2002, he retired from a 30-year military career, 10 years active and 20 years reserve. He maintained a practice as a Certified Public Accountant from 1986 until his retirement in 2010.

He was committed to numerous organizations including Boy Scouts of America, where he attained the rank of Eagle Scout, Reserve Officers Association, Military Officers Association of America, Spring Meadow Veterans Club, and Civil Air Patrol of New York and Delaware. He had a keen interest in all things military, especially the Civil War, as well as a love for playing country music on his guitar and singing Irish ballads to anyone who would listen.

He is survived by Catherine, his wife of 43 years, his children Rebecca MacMillan, Jennifer (Greg) Miller, and Adam (Brittney) Bernfeld, as well as his mother Sonya Bernfeld (Joseph Gianfrancesco). He will also be greatly missed by his grandchildren Sarah Grace Miller, Emily Kate Miller, Luke William Bernfeld, and Lily Catherine Bernfeld. He was predeceased by his father Arnold and his brother Howard.
