When checking into E-services today the MER Chain of Command shows Col Gerald Weiss as the Commander of MER vice Col Knowles. Wonder what happened.

Could be that Col Knowles is going to be out of the country. They'll often make the CV the CC temporarily while the CC is out of pocket.

usually if the CC is unavailable they invest the acting Commander with the authority, but unless there is a death, they don't announce an acting Commander who is covering while the actual CC is unavailable.

When my Wing CC leaves the country, they actually replace him in eServices while he's OCONUS.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I texted him.  He's in Germany for a week.  Weiss is acting CC.

That's common practice. NHQ cuts orders making the Vice Commander the Acting Wing Commander every time the Wing Commander is out of the country or unavailable for more than a few days. That's because there are certain duties and responsibilities that only the Wing Commander can do, so that ensures the wing continues functioning in the temporary absence of the Wing Commander.
