Hello all, first post here.  I am a CAP Mission Pilot and a FAA Commercial Pilot. I have my checkride for my CFI coming up in a week.  I remembered another friend of mine got promoted directly to captain because he was already a CFI.  My problem is I am not 21 yet..  So would I be promoted to Senior Flight Officer when I become a certified flight instructor? Thanks

Your friend received what is called a "Mission Related Skills" appointment/promotion. The requirements for this type of promotion are found in Section D of CAPR 35-5. The relevant piece of information for you is found in paragraph 4-2, a.

     a. Be at least 21 years of age.

To directly answer your question, no you would not. No provision exists for FO mission related appointments. That being said, as soon as you turn 21, the rules do kick in and you can put in for Capt.

Good luck on your "practical test". The FAA inspector may bust your balls for terminology. ;)

Just remember that when you hit 21, in order to make Major, you will need to complete all the training and PD requirements that are required to make it to captain and then on to major.

Didn't we discuss this once and the person asking was a helicopter CFI and his CC denied the advanced promotion citing that CAP doesn't have helicopters?

All promotions are at the discretion of the chain of command, none are automagic.

I thought commercial pilot got Captain, of course if they were active in CAP flying?

Any skill-based promotion should be contingent on you actually using that skill for CAP.

CFI, but not using those CFI skills to benefit CAP? Have a nice day.
