    Hello everyone,

I am fairly new to the program and have yet to attend a TRAEX. I have the opportunity to do so in coming up in the next few weeks and I was wondering what exactly I would do since my qualifications are rather limited.

    I have:

    • ICUT
    • GES
    • And am in training as an MSA

It would also be helpful to know what others do. Is this to simulate a mission or evaluate skills? Will I have the opportunity to earn more qualifications?

Thank you!

The TRAEX/TRAINEX are more of a test to evaluate the training you are supposed to have taken at Group and Squadron levels, however some people are able to use them to train and practice. So yes you will get an opprtunity to get sign-offs.

They are set up as a scenario where goals are set. The sorties are in support of those scenarios.

For instance, one TRAEX might say "A hurricane has passed over New York with flooding along the Long Island and Catskill areas. The state Emergency Management Office has asked CAP to evaluate the extent of the flooding. In addition, county executives have asked to see the damage firsthand."

So the Incident Commander has to set a flight to photograph over the "affected area," photos taken - the aircrew practices using required cameras, or finding they needed more training in its use... Ground Teams go out to find out how to get there. Another flight may be set up to overfly the area with the mission of "flying the Cty Exec..." Once at a Westchester Mission Base I had to go out with a ground team to recce a dam at a water reservoir that provided water for NYC. Had a heck of a time since I was not living in that county, and the maps I had were not reflecting the knowledge that people familiar with the area had. I think I chucked the maps and relied in a cadet that lived there... At another I was assigned to go to one of the Finger Lakes to get water quality samples. Not only did the ground team had to figure out how to get there but we also had to figure out how to get the samples since the Ground Ops Director did not provide containers nor told us where to get them. We ended up using Coke bottles and some buckets we found around the mission base.

Check on what you need as prereqs and your commander can sign you off as a trainee so you can operate as whatever capacity you would like.

UDF, GTM & MRO only require GES as a prereq so you could begin training in any of those roles.

According to regulations, before you begin training you may have to take and have approved familiarization and preparatory training. For GTM training before being a trainee, you have to have taken all this:

Ground Team Member Level 3 - Familiarization and Preparatory Training
Complete Task O-0001 (Prepare ground team individual equipment)
Complete Task O-0002 (Conduct individual refit)
Complete Task O-0003 (Prevent and treat hot weather injuries)
Complete Task O-0004 (Prevent and treat cold weather injuries)
Complete Task O-0101 (Identify natural hazards)
Complete Task O-0102 (Prevent and treat fatigue)
Complete Task O-0103 (Conduct field sanitation and hygiene)
Complete Task O-0201 (Use a compass)
Complete Task O-0601 (Conduct actions if lost)
Complete Task O-0902 (Exercise universal precautions)
Complete Task P-0102 (Conduct a phone alert)
Commander Approval for Familiarization and Preparatory Training
GTM3 - Commander Approval for Familiarization and Preparatory Training

However some Ground Branch Ops Directors allow people to go out with the required Fam and Prep tasks depending on how many qualified are there.

That is true it will depend on your chain of command and the discretion of the GBD or IC.

A TRAINEX is just what it says: a training exercise. They're designed to accomplish the training requirements of each task that you're in training for. A SAREX is designed to exercise the skills of trained personnel.

Okay, thanks everyone! I have some more training to get through and some more pre-reqs to complete prior to participating so I'll get to work on those. Thanks again!

Check with your chain of command. If it's a training exercise, you might be able to get some of your tasks signed off.
