ARMY:  Because even the Marines need heros.
CAVALRY:  If it were easy it would be called infantry.

I had the dubious distinction of riding a Martin-Baker Mark V seat every time that I got into an Army OV-1 Mohawk.  Torture device of the worst sort, but it would have gotten my young a--- out of the airplane had I ever needed to use it.  If I remember correctly, chute deployment in the early models required at least 75 Kts forward airspeed and later ones got deployed at 50 kts and zero altitude: a big jump forward.  The later seat deployment sequence took something like 1.5 seconds from pulling the D handle to chute deployment

I have a number of friends who are members of the Caterpilar Club: meaning that they had successfully ejected from an airborne aircraft.  Some of them made the trip in Laos, others in VN.

Ejection - aka the "Martin-Baker Let down!"

It may rearrange your spine, but it beats the other option!

NIN

I had to ride the seat sim before I could fly in an OV-1.

It was a little disconcerting removing the safe pins on the seat and knowing you're "riding live."

NIN: we all had to ride the seat sim for the OV-1.  Korea didn 't have one in 1963, when I was there.  On one occasion, we had a partial hydraulic failure and thought that we might get to walk back to Seoul.  It was January and the rice paddies were frozen, so the thought of a walk didn't appeal much to the two of us.  Turned out to be in the speed board circuit and didn't affect loweing either the gear or the flaps.
