For Mission Obeserver or Search and Rescue, choose Senior or Composite squadron

I am considering joining the Civil Air Patrol and am interested in looking into eventually getting involved as either a Mission Observer or in some type of role in Search and Rescue.  With that in mind would it be better for me to look for a  Senior Squadron or a Composite squadron?   Thank you.

Squadron focus is considerably different from one to another.  I'd advise you to attend at least 3 meetings of every CAP unit near enough for you to drive to.  If you're primarily interested in flying, obviously the squadrons with planes assigned to them are going to be somewhat preferable.

+1 There's very little connection, necessarily, between the charter definition and the actual operations.

In my wing, the most active aerial squadrons are designated "Composite", but that doesn't preclude the
handful of "cadet" squadrons from flying, either.

As said, your best best is to find units in your area and either visit them or call the CC and discuss what you are interested in.

Also, having a plane assigned or in proximity, isn't necessarily an indicator, either, though it doesn't hurt.

If any of the commanders tell you "We're getting a plane", or "I'm going to put in for a plane.", and they don't have
an actual date and a cadre of pilots, listen with a grain of salt.  Some units believe getting a plane will be
the impetus for their growth, when it actually operates the opposite.
