I am in a really small squadron with only one other cadet that wants to start Emergency Services. I have taken my 116 and 117 part 1 tests, I'm old enough and I've passed my first achievement. I have talked with the seniors and they basically brush off my idea of starting the program. I like my squadron and want to stay at it, but can I tag along with other squadrons and join their teams so I can go to SAREXs?

Eclipse

Yes, you can participate anywhere you like.

You do, however, need your Unit CC's permission.

So I can just hop in and become a member of their team?

Eclipse

Well, it's not quite that simple - you have Fam / Prep training to do, and obviously they need to be amenable to your involvement, but yes, there is nothing formal in regards to training with other units or echelons.

As a matter or policy, all AFAMs are open to anyone interested in participating, again assuming you are qualified to be there and have permission from the unit CC.

What is the familiarization/preparation training, and can I do it on my own?

A fair number of tasks that you must complete as initial training.  You can "learn" these
skills on your own or through any other means you can find, however you will need to demonstrate
these skills to an SET in order to get them signed off.

Download the GT/UDF task guide from the NESA site to see what these are.

Also, if you are needing information at this basic level, you really should connect with someone
locally who can help you.

Thank you for the information, and I will definitely take a look at the guide you mentioned.

If your squadron has no GT trained personnel.....I would suggest that you get with your ES officer and commander and see if they can't do the ground work for you to hook up with some other nearby squadron that has the skills you need.

You don't want to blind side someone at a SAREX wanting to join their team with zero training.

As Eclipse points out....get the GT task guide and study what you can on your own.  Then get with your leadership to get you hooked up with a squadron who can do the training and evaluations.
