Hey everyone,
overheard a conversation between the flight sergeant and a basic cadet and he was making fun of the basic cadet saying stuff about his acne and his uni brow, I told him to stop it wasn't nice he did it again and I told him again, and then I sent the squadron commander an email and he asked to talk to both of them on the next meeting. any idea what kind of trouble I may of gotten the flight sergeant into? I didn't want to be a tattle tale but I thought it was neccesary considering he's a tech and flight sergeant and hes the highest ranking under under me and I'm the flight/ cadet commander.

Please let me know if I did the right thing. :-[

You did. For one, that kind of behavior has no place in CAP; it even goes against our core value namely respect - respect isn't a one-way street. I've always enjoyed asking those types of "leaders" how that kind of behavior is helping to accomplish our mission(s). Secondly, it's even worse because disobeying your directives is insubordination, plain and simple. His insubordination, disrespect, and poor leadership will be a killer to your squadron if left unchecked.

You did the right thing.

You talked to the person involved.....twice before taking it up the chain.....perfect intervention protocol as far as I am concerned.

For the record......you did not get the flight sergeant into trouble.....he did that all by himself.

In my squadron....if what you said happened....the way you said it happened......we would be looking for a new Flight Sergeant.

In a word... Superb.

This Sergeant (if he remains that rank :P) is probably going to dislike you for it. He might display some self-righteous contempt for your judgement on his behavior, but the point to keep in mind is that your judgement was spot on. I would expect this in boot camp, but it has no training value in CAP. Who knows, you might have just become the only reason that junior cadet will stay with your unit, simply because you stood up for him when he didn't feel he could do it himself.

Good work!

You did the right thing. Don't worry about it, it's never right for ANYONE to insult ANY cadet, regardless of rank, grade, position, or anything else. It's ok to joke every once in a while, but it's never appropriate to make fun of someone, especially when you hold a position over someone else.

^^^^^   This.

Oh, and let's not forget that it's also never acceptable to make fun of us SMs who can't do pushups because of the flab below and the donut in each hand.   Even if you're making fun of yourself.   Like I just did.   Wait, what?

Life as a teenager is awkward enough to not have to come to CAP and be made fun of by people you are supposed to share a bond with.

The only thing I would say is maybe going straight to the Squadron Commander was probably a big jump to the top.  1st Sgt,  Flight Commander, Cadet Commander, Deputy Commander for Cadets.  I'd say you jumped 3-4 people in the chain.

In a perfect Squadron yes and I thought every Squadron was perfect until I did a tour as an IG. People jump all the way to either the National Commander, the National Chaplain or the National IG. So when it came back to me I would ask them about the chain of command and they would usually have no ideal Wing Staff exists or when they had a problem with the boy scouts they called the national office so they thought it would be the same with CAP.
