All,

Recently I foolishly opened my mouth about the lack of CLC around and wound up volunteering to be the director of our next CLC.  I have no issues doing this.  I did it before, and I will gladly do it again.

However, please help me with the following question, so take this as a poll?  I am looking to run this course Friday night and all day Saturday.  Saturday will probably go long, but then at least you'd have Sunday to you and your family.  Around the time I am planning to run this we have a graded SAR eval coming up, Encampment staff training (i am a part of) and some other Wing and Squadron activities, so I am trying to be creative.

If you were to attend, would you prefer?

A. Saturday/Sunday
B. Friday Night/Saturday
C. Two Saturdays

Your feedback would be appreciated!

I don't know what travel times are for you guys, but out here in the big empty that is west Texas travel times are anywhere from 90 minutes to 4 hours to go to a CLC. So based on that alone I would never really want to do a Fri/Sat event. You would have to start early Fri afternoon and end late Fri evening and Sat evening. I know that when I took SLS/CLC and it ended around 5-6 in the afternoon my brain had almost completely shut down. I can only imagine how vacant my mind would be if it lasted until 7 or 8 at night.

Now of course, you're in an entirely different part of the country, so maybe these concerns have little impact on your members. But for what it's worth, I would not do a Fri/Sat CLC. 2 Saturdays might work if the commute times are low, but Sat/Sun would be my first choice.

Fri / Sat is not a good idea.  Your participants will be exhausted by Sat evening and you'll lose them.

I prefer Sat/Sun. Travel Friday, and if there's time have a social event in the evening. Class Saturday and Sunday, ending @ 1400 Sunday. Go home.

Two Saturdays doubles the travel, and loses some of the off-hours interaction that is one of the benefits of these activities.

Kudos for thinking outside the proverbial box. We've traditional held SLS and CLC on Saturday-Sunday, but there is no requirement that this is the only way to do it. About two years ago, a local project officer planned a SLS on Friday evening and all day Saturday. It got a very good response (in particular, my new chaplain appreciated it!). It was held in a metropolitan area with a large CAP membership. Would it work in West Texas? Of course not.

In a metro area, a SLS or CLC held on two Saturdays would probably be just as successful, if there are enough students (and staff!) willing to drive in to the class. Over the years, I've had several prospective students ask if they could attend SLS #1 on Saturday, and SLS #2 (several months later), on another Saturday. "No Go", since there's no way guarantee that the two schedules mesh and the student completes the entire curriculum. For a "two-Saturday SLS", it must be made clear to the students that they must complete both days to receive credit.

As long as your student pool is all local, there's nothing that says you can't do it over four evenings.  My unit ran an SLS this way a few years ago, as an add-on to our unit meetings.  As long as you have twelve contact hours, how you get them is up to you.

If people have to travel to attend, then Sat-Sun, no doubt. Localized attendees only? Spreading it out a bit is OK.
