Anybody on CAPTalk going to the Massachusetts Wing Conference on March 30/April 1, 2012 in Springfield, Mass.?  I just spotted the details here: http://mawgconference.com/

It's not too far of a drive from my place in Boston, but I don't serve in Mass Wing so I don't really know anybody. Figured I'd see if any CAPTalkers from the area were planning on attending.  You guys are probably a more interesting bunch anyway  >:D

Yes, and hopefully as a cadet aide, too.

My recommendation is don't leave that hotel and walk the streets.  Even walking over to the Basketball Hall of Fame from that location could be a security issue. :(

My understanding is the vans won't be able to be parked in the parking garage to the hotel but will be parked elsewhere.   Personally, I'd bring the vehicles up to the military base and park them there rather than in some unguarded parking lot, where there's a high potential for a break in. :(

The hotel itself is a great and the people involved in planning it are very dedicated and have done a great job.   The only issue IMHO is its' location in Springfield, MA. :( It could have been held in Sturbridge (site used 2 years ago) (nice calm area with a duck pond, closer for most units as far as travel time and that same hotel was really looking for business this spring -- the biggest problem was their feeding everyone in a timely manner at lunch).   Also the Hyannis site last year was a long drive for most members BUT the facilities were great and the lunch break planning was super since they set up pizza and some other healthy food tables (already prepared) right in the conference area so members could just buy the food & drink right there and tables/chairs were set up to eat at.  (I think in Springfield they may do the same kind of thing).

Again other than the potential security issues, (which again I can't stress enough IF you decided to walk around away from the hotel) I think the wing membership can get a lot out of the conference in a very nice facility.

Odd, I've serviced clients in two buildings adjoining that hotel (even used their parking garage) and never felt uncomfortable.

I'd prefer to go into Boston before Springfield.  Unfortunately, on occasion even in the daytime I'm down at the court house on business, and even on Main St, it reminds me of a third world country (for me it's like the middle east  Turkey).  Lots of people hanging around potentially up to no good (and that's during the business day, it's a potential run for your life at night in that area, although they now have a special law enforcement/security task force that works that entire area partially funded via downtown businesses).  Even driving off the interstate in that area you have to be very careful because NO one seems to understand what the "do not walk" signs mean in those cross walks and on the Main Street area --- it's a free for all with vehicles and pedestrians just walking out randomly into the road.

Like I said before the hotel and the parking garage (which has numerous security cameras and a separate security patrol) is fine.  IF you venture out of the immediate hotel area, than all bets are off on your personal security.    HOWEVER, I'm a country type guy and don't really like to go into any cities' down town area, so I'm just one opinion, but it's better IMHO to be conservative on personal security matters.

Springfield is like any other urban area in the U.S.  Use the brains that God gave you when you go out and you will be fine.

Very nice facilities, no problem parking and great security.   Very informative general assembly and training sessions.   Cadets did an outstanding job on their exhibits    Never ceases to amaze me what many of them know 8)

Media coverage was a challenge this year due to the "1000 Hoddies Walk..." for the teenager who died in FL.  The initially gathering was 1 block east of the hotel and two out of the three TV's stations could not support CAP today, neither could the regional newspaper.

However, due to one unit PAO's efforts the NBC affiliate did a very good story:    http://www.wwlp.com/dpp/news/local/hampden/civil-air-patrol-members-meet-in-spfld?ref=scroller&categoryId=20000&status=true
