So, I am filling out a CAPF-2 Action for Promotion. I looked on EServices and have asked others, what exactly is the orientation? Is this documented?

Why are you filling out anything when it takes a few mouse clicks for your commander to promote you?

The orientation is the OPSEC training, the intro to safety, cadet protection, EO training, and foundations modules.  We assign a mentor to a new member to work with them through these requirements.  In my squadron we keep a copy of the foundations quizzes and CPPT quiz in the members file.  We also keep a CAPF-2 in the members file, even though it is entered on-line.

Because my understanding was that you had to fill out a CAPF-2 in order to promote. However, if I do not need to, that is way less paperwork for me.

Duty performance promotions can be initiated and approved in eServices. See CAPR 35-5 Section 1-8b

Although not required, I'll fill out a Form 2 for the member's file.

Wasted paper no one will ever see or care about.

Just as an FYI, look in under "Training" in your eServices records for your Level 1 and CPPT dates.

I did. Level 1 and CPPT and OPSEC are in there, but when it said "Orientation" I had no idea what that was.

What about when a member needs to reconstruct their history 10, 20, 30 years down the road? That stuff isn't going to be online, all that they will have is paper.

And that's a fact, Jack!

Only yesterday did I finally find my olde SM record from 22 years ago in a box in the garage. It will now enable me to fill in the missing items and correct the erroneous items in my online record.

Nothing really wrong here but again, it's not required. You could simply print out the page of the individual member from e-services, file it and it's a done deal.

Look under "Achievements". If it reads "Level One" and "OPSEC" you're done with Level One. Under "training" you'll find the specific requirements for Level One such as "Foundations (Orientation)" and "Safety". Hope this clears things up for you.

Why wouldn't it be online?

It'll probably be holographic storage or wet-wired into the matrix, but it will be there if it needs to be.
Not to mention the fact that the only promotion or PD level that really matters is the most recent one.

If that's a concern, print our your stuff from eServices. All your records on a couple pages. Print it out when ever you like to keep a paper record.

I've had to deal with two members that came back after a few years absence. Fortunately they had paper copies of their records, because there were huge gaps in what was available at NHQ.

I was able to reinstate a promotion because the member had kept the original Form 2. Since then, I've kept copies of everything. PDFs don't take a lot of storage space.

When you do the electronic promotion, there will be checkmarks for each requirement for promotion and wheter the requirements have been met. It won't proceed until all the requirements are met.

Correct, but there are still a few forms that occasionally need that info...

True, but the question was about SM promotions and the CAPF 2
