The AF appears to have two pullover sweaters, the old 100% pullover and a new 50 percent acrylic, 50 percent wool pullover, which looks smoother in appearance.
39-1 (which is a million years outdated) shows a photo of the old sweater, however only says "pullover sweater".

Can we wear the new style or must we purchase the older style?

You can only wear the USAF uniform items that are specifically authorized by CAP regulations.  IF the regulation is behind and there's no IMC's posted, than you have your answer  -- NO!!!

CAPM 39-1 Doesn't specify which material the Pullover Sweater should be made out of, they do however specify the material for the Cardigan Sweater. I guess either one would be acceptable.

To prove it;
Quote from: CAPM 39-1 Pullover SweaterV-neck, long-sleeve, with epaulets and cuffed
sleeves. Indoor or outdoor garment; tie is
optional when wearing short sleeve shirt;
wear collar or shirt inside or outside sweater;
not exposed when wearing another outer
garment.

Quote from: CAPM 39-1 Cardigan Sweater50% acrylic and 50% wool cardigan sweater
with epaulets. Indoor or outdoor garment;
when worn outdoors must be buttoned. Tie is
optional when wearing short sleeve shirt.

That would apply if the CAPM 39-1 was any more specific than saying the USAF "pullover sweater".  If USAF changes the material makeup of the pullover sweater, it's still the USAF pullover sweater.
