In the words of my Sqd/CC- "You aren't here to be everyone's friend- you're here to lead and set an example."

I'm not saying to disrespect the SMs- far from it. But do your best to establish an atmosphere of professionalism.

For example, in my squadron- a drill movement, a uniform specification, an inspection will all be taught according to how the cadet or SM in charge believes it is stated in the manual- however, any cadet may raise concerns with that method and bring the proper citation to the soonest possible meeting/event, and from there on out the situation is corrected.

This is more of an issue with touchy/changed topics like uniforms and drill movements such as Parade Rest.
For example, the wear of the ES patch- Col thought it went below the nametape, I brought a reference saying otherwise- and applicable cadets were warned to either look it up or wait to sew on their patch.
With Parade Rest, we have JROTC cadets, prior USMC, USN, and USA in our squadron- everyone except the USAF does the movement one way- Air Force has to be different, eh? Anyway, we pulled out the new Cadet Drill Guide and all was well.

Most of these disputes arise from SMs or cadets who have taken a long CAP break (then got back in when our squadron started and gave them a closer unit), or the prior service folks who think "WIWOAD we did it this way, and THAT was the REAL military!"
But when you pull out the governing reg, well... Integrity usually kicks in. The REAL military stresses that, too ;)

This is called leading from the bottom.  We had a good discussion about this at the SLS I attended this past weekend.

I read plenty of regs as a cadet, but then I was homeschooled and didn't have much else to do. >:D
