Are there any campsites, parks, etc... where my squadron could work on the model rocketry program in or around the Tampa bay area, FL? I am currently looking at Fort DeSoto and Sand Hill. The campsite would need to have a campsite where a bunch of cadets and a couple SMs could camp comfortably, and where we could launch our rockets.

Thanks for any suggestions. :)

Your unit has done a few bivouacs at Ft DeSoto in the past, not sure about their rules on model rocketry though as those bivouacs were mostly centered around ES training and team building.  Would be worth calling them up or taking a drive down there.

Thank you Sir. DeSoto was my first choice, and I hope they would let us fire off rockets. Sent them an E-Mail, now waiting for a response.

I don't know if they have it in FL but contact the 4H. They have a rocketry program. They should be able to tell you a good place to shoot.

My ex-squadron used to launch rockets at Sand Hill.

I assume the BSA knew about it and was okay with it, but I can't definitively say this was the case.

Well, Fort DeSoto's a no-go. If anybody's interested, here's why:
QuoteSec. 90-18.
(b) No person may bring into or have in his possession, or set off or otherwise cause to explode,
discharge or burn in any park or on any public lands or highways adjacent thereto, any firecrackers, torpedoes,
rockets, or cannon or other fireworks or explosives of flammable material or any substance, compound,
mixture, or article that, in conjunction with any other substance or compound may explode, discharge or burn.
(Ord. No. 02-7, § 2, 1-8-02)
Now to try Sand Hill!

That's a bad law because it outlaws just about everything. Everything can burn.

Yes, there will be. It is currently being planned (along with some other fun activities) and your Commander will hear more about the early details at this weekend's planning meeting/Commander's Call.

You should talk to your Group ES officer.  He has a hook up with the Boyscouts to use Sandhill or Camp Soule.
