Or is it REALLY annoying when the Volunteer abbreviates grade incorrectly? It was really bugging me in the CLA article when they put C/2nd Lt instead of C/2d Lt over and over.

Yes - but odds are they are going by a press style guide instead of the correct abbreviations, so technically they are correct for the press.

One more place that a 15 minute conversation could end the discussion - we just change and be done with it.

It's not even a versus thing. PAO regs says use the AP style guide for outside releases. Volunteer sorta counts.
