What gear is issued by most places?  If it isn't issued, but i don't know what should i buy thats almost necessary? Also, what should i buy thats optional, but is still sort of important?
Are dog tags a good choice or not?

It varies wildly what units have.  A well stocked unit may have a complete set of uniform items and some of the most expensive gear, like backpacks and such.  Otherwise, there are many sources including:

Dog tags are great in case you get dead in combat.  Travel dog tags are also excellent for your bags.  I use them for my luggage.  www.traveldogtags.com

I can also recommend http://www.backpackgeartest.org/

I kind of feel like we should have a couple sticky posts for gear sources and gear tips.  Mike/MIKE/Jerry?

  • The Hock Shop
  • US Cavalry (tends to be expensive-ish)
  • Search Gear
  • Cheaperthandirt.com
  • REI
  • Eastern Mountain Sports
  • Galls
  • Campmor

Combat like boom and bang, blood and stuff.  This does not happen.  That is my point.  But I do recommend those tags for your bags.

Look at the gear lists first.

Too many stickies are evil.  However, a single sticky might be useful.   Make up a post and I'll sticky it for you.

I like boards with properly selected and organized stickies.  Just a few at the top with common stuff and a way to organize hoards of information.  I shall start one.

Google the word 'facetious'.

Your dad's army stuff (I'm assuming and old LBE, canteens and what not) will be fine to start with. If you get into Emergency Services, you may want to get some more specialized gear. I would highly recommend against going out and blowing a ton of money on gear before you really know what you need/want though.

The best thing you could start with are a few complete uniform sets, including appropriate, authorized outerwear.
