Here is another nice tool I have come across. It is very useful for setting up a mission network in the presence of an existing network or finding existing networks to use (with permission of the ower of course.)
Its called inSSIDer.

I love the channel view which helps you adjust the channel setting on your router to avoid interference.
+1
We use this at work as a first step to investigate wireless issues.
I have an Android app, that while not this sophisticated, gives me channel graphs and shows which channels are in use, what the signal strength and such

Works well, along with my level app that we've used for the mobile ICP trailer a time or two!
^ I use that one on occasion - a few weeks ago I hunted down the wifi antenna at a campground to get a decent signal. Picture a guy driving around in a golf cart in the dark with a high-tech display on his tablet making a tracker noise the closer I got.
I have the Wifi Analyzer app, as well. Use it fairly rarely, mainly if I'm having connection issues to my home wifi, and check to see if I'm getting interference from the neighbors. :)

I'm sort of disappointed your story doesn't involve a Pringles can.

It probably would if I was there longer than a weekend.
I have used NetStumbler for years to, but it would appear inSSIDer is a superior replacement. Thanks.
