I keep a classic (OD Canvas) messenger bag, pens, 4x5 notepad, tactical pocket knife, leatherman, flashlight, basic first aid kit, emergency strobe light, reflective blanket, leather gloves, wool watchcap, small digi camera, hand sanitizer, wipes, face cloth, toothbrush/ paste, floss, nail clippers, water bottle, granola or protein bars, aspirin, motion sickness pills and other assorted goodies.   I find most of the time I am unable to take my full flight bag, so this is a stripped down BOE (Bag of Evil), I take on my flights.

I also keep it in my car as a stripped down first aid, go bag.

My flight bag contains the above plus my headphones, ASEK survival knife, knee board, full size digi camera, batteries, E-6 computer.  The first aid kit is a little bigger with more trauma items.

I keep a standard EMT kit with fairly new items purchased locally. No Surplus!! those items should not be used unless it is non disposable items (splints, scissors, etc) sterile items should never be purchased surplus.

I may keep a field x-ray device in my bag for cooking soup.
