A member of Florida Wing is currently (as we type) attempting to set a world speed record in a single engine plane. Capt CarolAnn Garratt is flying around the world (westward) in 7 days to raise money and awareness for ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) research.

Here's an article:

Capt Garratt is a wonderful woman and a devoted CAP Instructor Pilot and Check Pilot. She is in Marion County Composite Squadron and also works a great deal with Gainesville Composite Squadron.

If you'd like to follow her journey, check out http://www.alsworldflight.com/ and http://flightaware.com/live/flight/N220FC. They are posting flight logs and updates along the way.

The post at the bottom of the link article brought up a valid thought.....

How much are they going to raise vs. how much is it going to cost to do this?

Well, the book published from her first trip around the world raised over $60,000, which all went to ALS research.

They are paying for the trip out of pocket, all money is going to ALS research. There is a podcast on the site where CarolAnn explains a lot of how the trip will work.

Update: Capt. Garratt and her crewmate have returned to the U.S. this morning,  landing at MCO at 0855 EST. They have not yet released the statistics for the flight.
