I was on their site yesterday looking up the number of one of the "Spaatz mafiosi" and ended up reading the list of memorials to Spaatz cadets who had passed.

Seems like the ones listed died relatively young from either aircraft wrecks or some form of cancer. Am I reading too much into this or is this a prevalent trend?
"And Saint Attila raised the Holy Hand Grenade up on high saying, "Oh Lord, Bless us this Holy Hand Grenade, and with it smash our enemies to tiny bits. And the Lord did grin, and the people did feast upon the lambs, and stoats, and orangutans, and breakfast cereals, and lima bean-"

" Skip a bit, brother."

"And then the Lord spake, saying: "First, shalt thou take out the holy pin. Then shalt thou count to three. No more, no less. "Three" shall be the number of the counting, and the number of the counting shall be three. "Four" shalt thou not count, and neither count thou two, execpting that thou then goest on to three. Five is RIGHT OUT. Once the number three, being the third number be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade to-wards thy foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuffit. Amen."

Well, it is sort of common sense in that the award hasn't been around long enough for many of the cadets who earned it early on to reach the age at which they are likely to die of natural causes.

Yeah... I stumbled across that page today and noticed the same thing. Weird...

Wait hasn't the Spaatz award been around since 1964? I guess you could call gravity a natural cause though...

Rather insensative wouldn't you say?  Morbid?  You've locked for less, Mike. ;)

Yep, and those folks who earned it that early are in their 50s and 60s so the "discrepancy" in causes of death will probably start to even out over the next 10 years.

I knew two of these 'fallen diamonds' personally. Paul Starr was a member of Bitburg-Spangdahlem Cadet Squadron (99117 - no relation to the current Spangdahlem Cadet Squadron (NHQ-OS-126)) along with me. His RealAirForce® personality was as an AF captain and squadron section commander  for the 52nd Supply Squadron; he was quite proud of displaying his Spaatz certificate in his office.

Ivan Suarez I knew briefly; we were both cadinks in FL Wing.

We're all proud of you, going to medical school, Nathan. We're just not certain that The Doctor Ben Dover's College of Proctology, "The Fighting Sphincters" is the best choice for quality medical education. >:D ;D >:D ;D >:D ;D

And... it is never too early to start thinking of a specialty.

Stay away from Proctology, since that's a pain in the butt, I hear.

Urology is a real pisser.

What I know about you is that you have heart and high expectations for your life. If you can consider the part of becoming a Medical Doctor that involves personal sacrifice in terms of effort and discomfort and decide that helping people matters more well you really should push forward.
