I am a former Army Paratrooper that is still, despite my near decrepit age of 38 :D, in decent physical shape. I attribute this to a steady workout regime and decent diet.

Does any squadrons have a voluntary, notice I said voluntary, PT program? I was thinking of tossing one together, if nothing else something that would be used by the Seniors at their own pace at home and perhaps a Saturday or Sunday get-together if they wished.

Thoughts?

Always a good idea, but never gets the participation it probably should. My unit had no problems with Officer joining the cadets in PT, and even assures that all Officers get a PT uniform. As far as having a seperate plan for the Officers, that would be a great idea. I know there would be no way to get 20 push-ups in one minute. Are you thinking of putting something together where Officers could gradually move up and do more over time? Or something like expectations like the cadets have? (I know that it wouldn't affect us PD wise)

VAWG does a "PT Challenge" every year to promote physical fitness.  Our squadron used to participate (before I transfered out).

There is a word document about half-way down the page that describes the program.  Our seniors enjoyed doing it because they tended to have more will power to do things regularly.

I could use a little PT...

At least with me working for myself I'm not tempted by donuts at the office.  :D

There's always the Air Force Pararescue Physical Ability and Stamina Test (PAST)

  • 20-Meter Underwater Swim
  • 500-meter surface swim
  • 1.5-mile run
  • Chin-ups
  • Flutter-Kicks
  • Push-ups
  • Sit-ups

I post this because I found it interesting, not because I could do it!

But I did come up with a T-Shirt for folks interested in PT:

As a 45 year old Chief Warrant Officer (with 27 years of service) I like the donut idea more than the PT idea.

No, no, donuts are too unhealthy.  You need to go with chocolate chip oatmeal cookies.  Chocolate has antioxidants and oatmeal is good for you, thus the cookies are healthy. ;D

Good enough excuse for me. ;D

When I was the Dep for Cadets for Sq. 45 MARB and Sq. 59 at Hemet I did the PT test with the cadets every month.  As far as Senior PT....it could be fun, but just make sure you dont look down or penalize those who choose not to take part.

Even at about 60 years old, Our leadership officer regularly smokes the cadets....but then he's also a semi-professional bicycle racer (which is how I met him and recruited him in with his son).

I mentioned Squadron PT as a healthy morning activity but was almost voted off the island.

When I was in a unit with cadets, I used to go out and do PT with them. It was sad that an out of shape 54 yo SM could beat about half the cadets in the mile run. Of course, the other half smoked me big time - as low as a 5:30 mile against my 8:30 mile.

An 8:30 mile is actually pretty good for a cadet, not to mention a 54 yr old senior.

That's not good enough for a 12 yo (or older) male to pass the Mitchell PFT. The 17+ male time for Spaatz is 6:23.

It's faster than a female cadet needs to earn her Spaatz...

I see that. Means nothing. That's why I said male cadets.

These times are based on 40 year old numbers. The system is flawed. Regardless, I think it's sad that I could outrun half the male cadets in my unit.

Gee, I guess I should feel pretty good about the 8:50 pace on my PT test last month.  Not bad for 53!

Well, my poor knees and hip won't let me run anymore...but, I have been known to get down on the floor with the cadets and do push-ups with them.  They are usually amazed that this 47 year old chaplain can do as many as I do.
