Here are a few recommendations from my library....

Emergency Response Institute in Washington state has a LOT of good stuff.  google them.
The SAR handbook used by the Inland SAR Course (taught around the country by AFRCC staff)

In no particular order ...
Hearts of Courage  by John M Tippets
The Bomber Mountain Crash by Scott Madsen
Wings over the Desert by Graham M. Dean
Flying Minute Men by Robert E. Neprud
Life Out There by Sergeant Johnny Bartek
Minutemen of the Air by Carroll V. Glines and Gene Gurney
And I Alone Survived by Lauren elder
Search and Rescue by Margaret Poynter
That Day in June, published by Ricks College
Death, Daring and Disaster by Charles R. "Butch" Farabee, Jr.
The Wilderness Handbook by Paul Petzoldt
Miracle on the Mountain by Mike and Mary Couillard
Hey, I'm Alive by Helen Klaben
Theory of Optimal Search by Lawrence D. Stone (heavy math)
International Mountain Rescue Handbook by Hamish Macinnes
Hero Next Door by Frank A. Burnham
The Art of Survival by Cord Christian Troebst
Leadership Lessons from Star Trek by Wess Roberts
Solo by Patricia O'Brien King
The Dynamics of Disaster by Susan W. Kieffer
Mountain Search and Rescue Techniques by W. G. May
Medicine for Mountaineering by James A. Wilkerson, MD

Before you all attack the list, this is my PERSONAL recommendation of books I have found of value in the past 44 years of CAP membership with a focus on ES and SAR and communications.  Yes, some are dated but ALL have some great stories and great lessons on leadership, leadership in crisis situations, the human will to survive, etc.

I have a couple more that I cannot find on the shelf (probably misplaced somewhere in the house or loaned)

Not knowing what specific SAR focus you wanted, these all cover a wide variety of topics ... most toward ES and SAR.

Have fun reading!

If your local SAR team has a history book, that's a good source for information on how SAR was/is handled in your area and may prove more interesting to your members.

You beat me to it. We have Bob come to AR every year or two and his workshop with latest updates, research, and teaching how to use the book is one of the best SAR trainings available. I look forward to it each time.

The Search for Haley by Tim Ernst is a good book. It is about the search for then 6 year old Haley Zega who went missing in the Buffalo River National Forest. It wast the largest AR SAR mission until last year when the search for AR Forestry Commission Pilot Jake Harrell took that title. Great read and many of AR's SAR improvements and newer teams exist because of the lessons learned. This search is used as a case-study for SAR management.
