That would be my entire question and confusion right there.

There's nothing to be "confused" about.

Black and brown are the only colors which may be worn. Pick one and move on, or wear the one prescribed by the commander.

If the commander authorizes any other color, respectfully show him the regulations and indicate that other colors cannot be authorized.

It's also not worth making a huge deal over.   More then a few commanders are confused on this
issue, and some make it even worse by misinterpreting the narrow allowance for a brown or black unit t-shirt as allowing them
to define any color they want.  39-1 does not allow for this. Same goes for the myriad encampments and similar activities that do this
all the time outside 39-1's allowance.

If you're told to continue with tan after making a polite, professional objection, wear it, move on, and
make sure to pack a black or brown one for activities with other units or encampment, etc.  If tan is viewed as an option
but not required, just don't wear it.

Did you by any chance just receive t-shirts from Vanguard?  The reason why I ask, is because I did (don't ask me why) and received shirts that were certainly better described to be "tan" in color.

I like to walk around and pretend I'm in the Air Force to get military discounts and free stuff ;)

Using ABU's for airsoft would be ridiculous, they're not even authorized for combat by USAF.

Last time i saw, ABU's dont wear "TAN" Shirts. There more "Wheat" or "Sand" Color, but i digress. When i think TAN i think of "Field Drab" tan. Which is closer to brown. I think my ADD is coming out again.

The tshirts worn with ABU's are refered to at http://www.afpc.af.mil/dress/maleabubdu.asp as 'desert sand.'

Here you can see them both on the screen together to see the difference between the  ABU/ACU sand and the BDU Brown tshirts.

I'm not sure if Vanguard made a mistake, but they offer"brown" t-shirts in the uniform items section of their CAP online store.  They describe them as "Civil Air Patrol Uniform": T-shirt, brown and list them for use with BDUs.  http://www.vanguardmil.com/civil-air-patrol-uniform-t-shirt-brown-p-7497.html  The t-shirts I received are not brown.  The color matches the ones made for use with ABU/ACUs.  I guess I'll be returning some shirts.

I "TRY" to stay away from Vanguard. They havnt got my order wrong so far "Crosses Fingers" I think there kinda pricey, i wish there was more options. If i need it, and cannot find it anywhere else, i use VG.
