First AF Commander video

At the Banquet last night, we got to see a video from the First Air Force Commander giving an award. I liked it. He was high speed. He kept referring to us as the Auxillary. He only said CAP once. I liked that as well. It lets me know the Air Force senior leadership respects us as their auxillary and not just a bunch of guys and gals playing Air Force. I really have a lot of respect for that guy.

Lt Gen Clarke sits on our Board of Governors. He is a huge supporter of ours.

And we return the favor. Usually the large majority of sorties on his daily Air Tasking Order for AFNORTH are CAP.

And he has invited us all down to Tyndall for our next meeting. I'm hoping for F-15 o-flights.

I'm not sure I understand why you have more respect for him because he referred to us by our designation and not our name. A name by the way, the pre-dates our designation by many, many years.

Regardless, I'm glad to hear the brass at 1AF have nice things to say about us!

1941 to 1947 is "many, many years?"

In between that time we were a virtual functioning arm of the USAAF. Remember who the first Air Medals of the Second World War were awarded to...and now we're not even eligible for them.

Throw brickbats if you must, but I think our name is verging on obsolescence.

Civil - We have not been a part of the Office of Civil Defence for many, many years.
Air - Flying is not our only raison d'etre.
Patrol - We do very little "patrolling" any more, certainly not in the manner of our "sub-chaser" forebears.

If the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary can be called solely that, then why not us (AUX ON/AUX OFF be hanged from the highest gibbet!)?

Indeed! YMMV, but it seems to me like most of the "warm fuzzies" we get come from higher-ranking officers like Lt Gen Clarke than the average Airman we might encounter on an AFB/ANGB/AFRC base.

Dropping the "Civil Air Patrol" name?

Really?

In 1985 or 1986, the seal was altered. "CIVIL AIR PATROL" went to the bottom of the outer ring, and the words that were below were rearranged and moved up. Seems that would have been a visual cue that was the direction national leadership wanted to go.

But we don't have the relationship to the parent service that the CGAUX has. Seems it's apples and oranges.

So, Lt GEN Clarke gets daily briefbacks on CAP taskings? I didnt know that. I don't particullary care for Commanders briefings (especially when I have to give them) but I would loe to be a fly on that wall. I am very proud to be a member of the USAF Aux and the poster who wrote why cant we just be called the USAF Auxilary just like the CG Aux only has one name is spot on. I totally agree with that statement.

From what I've been told it's not so much a brief as the General just reviews the Current Missions page on his computer.

Why do you think we have to do everything on the computer these days? Immediate visibility by all of the decision makers.

Why?

We don't function in the same capacity in relation to the Air Force that USCG Aux does for USCG, nor are we ever likely to do so. Different arena, different game.

A few months ago we had the honor at Travis to have the MSG CC come out and award two cadets with their milestone awards. This was also conducted during a major wing exercise. Fortunately I had the privilege of sitting down and talking with him for a few minutes. One thing he told me was that once you became a group commander you went down to the AFRCC and was given a tour of the facility and a brief on who and what Civil Air Patrol was and how we fit into the grand scheme of things.

Many members do not like how the current relationship is and it seems to be mixed across the board across the country. A question I would like to pose to those who wish the relationship was better is, "What can you do to make the relationship better?". Lets not focus on what we feel and think the AF should do for us but what we can do to repair or improve the relationship we have especially for those meeting on a AF base.

I think in order to make the relationship better is to become like the CG Aux. Have active duty Senior Air Force Officers involved in the day to day operatons of CAP. A long time ago when I was a cadet CAP NHQ was staffed by active duty Air Fore personnel. I am not saying go back to that but something similar.
