I got my Mitchell in 2004- 52766. We are well beyond the 50,000 mark.

There's really not much to add to the whole 'don't stop at chief' discussion.

That being said...anyone else notice this is a uniform thread that turned into a leadership one?  8) :o

Current Mitchell and Earhart awards have been numbered since January 1979. (See below for my Mitchell (April 1981) and Earhart award numbers.) Older CAP reports to Congress give total Mitchell and Earhart award numbers for the year, so you can estimate the total numbers with some simple arithmetic since the awards were introduced in 1964.
Lt Col Charles E. (Chuck) Corway, CAP
Gill Robb Wilson Award (#2901 - 2011)
Amelia Earhart Award (#1257 - 1982) - C/Major (retired)
Billy Mitchell Award (#2375 - 1981)
Administrative/Personnel/Professional Development Officer
Nellis Composite Squadron (PCR-NV-069)
KJ6GHO - NAR 45040

alright, I have a rather strange dilemma... I am very close to getting my Mitchell but as much as I'd like do do that, I have some reservations about becoming an officer. The biggest part is that I really don't want people always saluting, greeting, calling the room, etc. ( i don't mind so much at my home squadron) but is there anything in regulations that says that I can't still wear just chief insignia when I'm at an event so that that doesn't happen?

Don't be foolish. Go for it.

The whole aspect of your cadet training is to get you to this point. It's an important milestone that you  may regret never achieving. Also, don't get caught up on your current title, in the broad scheme of things it is a cadet rank that still low on the totem pole. There are other achievements ahead of you that are far more difficult and may not be achievable.

Remember, whether you are a cadet Senior NCO or a junior officer, you set the standard for the other cadets who look up to you. Do you want to be the one responsible for their actions and chose not to progress because of a title. The same goes with saluting, calling a room to attention, or other forms of respect. You may not be the one wanting all of that attention, but openly shying away from it becomes a bad example for those who you are leading.

So based off of the data I found on the unnumbered Mitchell Awards using the Reports to Congress as Maj Corway suggested and estimating 1964's number of Mitchells since I found no data for that year, I'd say we're around 86,642 total Mitchell Awards.

1964 – No data found, number used was 1,165 (Two-thirds of the average number of Mitchells from 1965 to 1978 – 1,748)
1965 – 2,061
1966 – 1,970
1967 – 1,929
1968 – 2,141
1969 – 1,917
1970 – 2,115
1971 – 1,425
1972 – 1,476
1973 – 1,645
1974 – 1,658
1975 – 1,835
1976 – 1,822
1977 – 1,456
1978 – 1,022

Total without 1964 estimate – 24,472
Total with 1964 estimate – 25,637
Cadet: 2006-2013, Spaatz #1873
