What is an acceptable price for a used AF Mess Dress jacket and trousers combo? I found one at the surplus store today, and the jacket actually fit me, and it was $30, with the 8th AF buttons. I didn't buy it because the trousers were way too big, but I'm changing wings next month and might need one for whatever they do there. It's been years since I was active in GAWG and have no idea if they even have events requiring mess dress.

$30 is a good price if it's in good condition.

Considering they cost hundreds of dollars new through AAFES, $30 even for just the jacket would be a good deal, especially since it sounds like it has the new Hap Arnold-style buttons.  You can always try and pick up the trousers as separates on eBay.  USAF mess dresses come up often there.

Great deal the jacket alone could cost up to $175

buy it and then sell it to one of these guys for a profit.
Don't know about GA wing, but I doubt its ever going to be appropriate to wear except at a wing conference awards banquet and even then you're going to be one of a very small number of people in that uniform.  If its worth it to you to buy it (and then find some pants), go ahead, but I doubt it will be "worth" it.

I dunno about GAWG, but about half the crowd at the CAWG conference banquet shows up in mess dress. I would if I could, but I'm barbate.

Most of the formal Wing events I've been to in two Wings have had a high proportion of mess dress wearers, along with the CSU before we got that taken from us.

Just saw this, 4:36 am, central time, Sunday, 2 December. If I didn't already have one.....

Isn't the shade of blue different though? Or would it work if you switched the buttons out?
CAP is what you make of it. If you don't put anything in to it, you won't get anything out of it.

The shade of blue is the same...but the buttons need to be replaced with the Hap Arnold ones.  Other than that, it's a great deal, unless the bidding gets silly.

You will have to replace the sleeve braid with CAP dark blue, but other than that, go for it!

I thought I had found a real deal on Ebay when I found a mess dress jacket, pants and cummerbund combo nearly my size for $49. I was going to jump on it. Then I wen thru VG and priced the buttons, mini medals, epaulets, etc. that I would need to make it CAP compatible. The total tab came out to about $200.  Don't need one that  bad.  :P
