What is the difference between the new style and old style service? At my squadron we have so many service coats, I do not know which ones are reg. Some have epaulets, some do not, while some have four pockets while others have two, etc. I read in 39-1 that officers wear epaulets on the coat while cadets do not, so do they wear the same coat just without epaulets? I need some definitive answers, so someone would please help me figure out this issue, that would be very much appreciated.

Big Edit (RTFM) - As a Senior Member and Officer, you may only wear the 3-button new-style jacket with epaulets.

Simple chart:
Senior Member:
Officer - New (current AF style) with epaulets and sleeve braid
NCO - New with or without epaulets, either without sleeve braid

Cadet - New or Old (4 pocket) with or without epaulets, no sleeve braid. CAPM 39-1 requires pants to match service coat in color and fabric.

Of course, keeping height/weight standards in mind for seniors and cadets 18 and over.

[edit at the request of a retired USAF NCO]
