Title: HIWG flies tsunami notification mission
Post by: JoeTomasone on February 27, 2010, 10:24:25 PM
In case you didn't hear on the WB stream or see the news item on the National site, HIWG is flying aircraft with a speaker system along Hawaii's shoreline to broadcast a Tsunami warning that was issued in the wake of the Chilean earthquake.

CNN also picked up on it, but attributes the mission to USAF and their Cessnas - that ought to raise eyebrows in a lot of places.   ("Colonel?  We have Cessnas?")

If anyone from HIWG has details they can share, I know that I for one would love to hear them.   For example, it is a taped recording that is played?  How low and slow must the mission be flown to ensure good audio reception on the ground?

I've yet to see CNN get much right about military stuff.  An operation I was associated with was reported by the CNN reporter "eye witness" as a missile attack.   ;D

But, to be fair, it did say the AF deployed 9 Cessna aircraft.  Didn't say they were AF.  (ever notice they hardly ever say "Piper aircraft"?  If it is a Piper, it's usually just a "light airplane."  Not always, but . . .)

Anyway, good on HIWG!  Well done!

If the HI ANG asked them to do it or if there was a mission number than I guess they were "deployed" by the Air Force. It still would be nice to acknowledge CAP for a bit if it though, after all it was our pilots up there.

At one point during the coverage, CNN referred to the mission as "the Coast Guard deployed aircraft with speakers to warn the beaches."

Maybe the CG did that also.
