A TSUNAMI WARNING CONTINUES IN EFFECT FOR THE STATE OF HAWAII.
AN EARTHQUAKE HAS OCCURRED WITH THESE PRELIMINARY PARAMETERS

EVALUATION
A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED THAT COULD CAUSE DAMAGE ALONG
COASTLINES OF ALL ISLANDS IN THE STATE OF HAWAII. URGENT ACTION
SHOULD BE TAKEN TO PROTECT LIVES AND PROPERTY.
A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF LONG OCEAN WAVES. EACH INDIVIDUAL WAVE
CREST CAN LAST 5 TO 15 MINUTES OR MORE AND EXTENSIVELY FLOOD
COASTAL AREAS. THE DANGER CAN CONTINUE FOR MANY HOURS AFTER THE
INITIAL WAVE AS SUBSEQUENT WAVES ARRIVE. TSUNAMI WAVE HEIGHTS
CANNOT BE PREDICTED AND THE FIRST WAVE MAY NOT BE THE LARGEST.
TSUNAMI WAVES EFFICIENTLY WRAP AROUND ISLANDS. ALL SHORES ARE AT
RISK NO MATTER WHICH DIRECTION THEY FACE. THE TROUGH OF A TSUNAMI
WAVE MAY TEMPORARILY EXPOSE THE SEAFLOOR BUT THE AREA WILL
QUICKLY FLOOD AGAIN. EXTREMELY STRONG AND UNUSUAL NEARSHORE
CURRENTS CAN ACCOMPANY A TSUNAMI. DEBRIS PICKED UP AND CARRIED
BY A TSUNAMI AMPLIFIES ITS DESTRUCTIVE POWER. SIMULTANEOUS HIGH
TIDES OR HIGH SURF CAN SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASE THE TSUNAMI HAZARD.
THE ESTIMATED ARRIVAL TIME IN HAWAII OF THE FIRST TSUNAMI WAVE IS
1119 AM HST SAT 27 FEB 2010
MESSAGES WILL BE ISSUED HOURLY OR SOONER AS CONDITIONS WARRANT.

Wow, an 8.8 earthquake. Don't see those every day.
A news story said the largest earthquake ever recorded hit the same part of Chile in 1962 and did cause a tsunami that killed people in Hawaii and damage along the west coast of the US.

Just to let you know I am safe and sound on Kwajalein, over 9000 miles from the earthquake epicenter (and 2100 miles from Honolulu). Because of the way the atoll is constructed it's very difficult for tsunamis to form. All we'll probably get is barely a ripple in the water.

I think this may be one of the few times I've seen NHQ update VolunteerNow on a weekend...the press release is up.

I got two automated recordings and two e-mails from the base emergency notification system, and a call from my squadron making sure I was alive.
Irony: getting flooded with messages warning you about a possible tsunami...
I'm in Denver at 5000ft. Should we ever get a Tsunami warning here, I promise to listen. Good work Hawaii, Good Luck Hawaii. It must've made for a tense and interesting day, in Hawaii.
It was an interesting day. The whole wing stood up for our tsunami warning/damage assessment mission.
We had good visibility on local media and good visibility up to the regular AF 4-star level.
Thank God we didn't have a damaging tsunami, but the state was as ready as it could be.
