Title: Other Volunteer Organizations
Post by: Angus on November 17, 2009, 09:16:22 PM
Knowing that we all do  many other things besides CAP I thought it might interesting to see what other things we do outside of CAP.

I'll start off.

I'm also in the Knights of Columbus, 2 CERT Teams, and I'm starting to volunteer with the Red Cross.

Besides being the Chaplain for the Hospital that I work for, I am also the Director of Volunteers.  If some of you are looking for additional volunteer experience hospitals are great places and the work you do will be very much appreciated.

I know from experience, that CAP members tend to be VERY busy people, but even if you can spare one or two hours a week it would be appreciated at your local hospital.

^^^ That was me in High School. :)

In college, the Freshman mandatory *We love everybody!* class had an assignment to check out DePaul clubs and see what we can be interested in. When it came time for me to say my piece, I said none.

I got this weird look from the Sophomore who was leading it, and half the class. I asked them when they want me to participate in a club in-between full time work and full time classes. The sophomore just said "okay then" and moved on. Then again, he is a music major, so his opinion of how the world works isn't worth it's weight in [poop].

Outside of CAP?  What is this strange place you speak of? :D

Seriously, I am a lifetime member of AMVETS, but I don't that much with them.

From time to time, I do help with discrete projects, like clean-up day at the C&O Canal.

Roger that.  Thanks for the info.  I plan on talking to people from both groups as I get closer to graduating.

I am involved in:

Sons of the American Legion (Squadron Commander and District Sgt.-at-Arms)
Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society (chapter President)

I am also a member of:

Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War
Society of Civil War Historians
The Historical Society
Society for Military History
Southern Historical Association
Army Historical Foundation

I will also soon be a member of the Company of Military Historians as well.

Most of the memberships are because of being a grad. student in History, so that I can keep up on scholarship in the various fields, but they are fun and offer chances to go to conferences as well.

Formerly:

  Gloucester County OEM
  South Jersey Aero Club
  Gloucester County Amateur Radio Club
South Counties Mutual Aid Group (RACES)
  ARRL Amateur Radio Emergency Service
  CAP

Now:

  CAP
  South Jersey Aero Club

Too many time commitments and was not doing anything very well. Now I have time to concentrate on just 2 organizations and am working to elevate my performance.
