Title: CAP Emergency Services Patch
Post by: Backwoodsman Pilot on November 11, 2009, 06:45:50 AM
Does anyone know if the dog on the CAP Emergency Services patch has an official name?

Here is a link to the patch.

The patch is the last one on the 3rd row.  You can also find the patch on my profile.

He looks a little bit like Pluto.   The coloring is all that's realy off.  The patch harkens back to WW2 when Disney gave the military and anything close to the Military the right to use some of their characters on patches and logos.

Not that I've ever heard.  People have all kinds of pet names for it but nothing official.

Historians and collectors refer to these patches as the "Pluto patch" - but not to the dog itself. The dog is actually a characture of a non-specific "Bird Dog".

Some have suggested that the patch's original design came from Disney, which very likely led to the coraltion with the cartoon character. Do you remember in the old Mickey Mouse films when Pluto would sniff around looking for something, and the tip of his skinny tail would "twinge" as if acting as a electronic locating device?

But no one I know has ever seen an authentic Disney version of this patch. I don't have the exact date of introduction with me at work, but it was around the mid-1960's - long after Disney ended its pro bono emblem designing of the WWII era.

So, the closest answer I can give you is, "the Bird Dog".

Now, the dog on the Connecticut Wing patch - THAT is a different story!  ;)

Yikes! If I were in CTWG, I'd wear the region patch instead!

To tell you the truth Pluto or Goofy could be pretty acurate being as Disney designed the Gremlin on the MN Wing Patch.
