Title: DCC
Post by: Flying Pig on September 01, 2009, 03:46:57 PM
My Deputy Commander for Cadets, Capt. Chris Meuer has left for Air Force Basic Training this morning.   He is an experienced CFII MEI and CAP Check Pilot and has finished up his Bachelors.  His ultimate plan is to score a coveted UPT slot in the future.  Good Luck Chris.

He went enlisted E-3.  He was a Mitchell cadet.  He will come back and schmooze with the pilots for a while as an F-16 mechanic before he applies.  Not sure exactly what job he got.  Something related to getting greasy on an F-16.

Enlisted go to basic training.

While that is true, ROTC does attend field training that most non military call Basic Training.

I wish him all the luck trying to get a UPT slot as an enlistee.

It is hard enough to get as a ROTC grad with a commission.

He needs to get to OCS ASAP

Whhy did he enlist instead of going to ROTC? Or is he in the reserves I assumed from your post he went active duty. Youid tell him only officers fly right?

Good luck to him. I was enlisted b4 I got commissioned and if Ihad to do it over again, I would have went straight to ROTC. Wouldntbe an old fart captain if I had  ;D

He enlisted into the Air National Guard.  He already had his BA.  I dont know what his reasons were.  Many of the current pilots in the unit were selected from prior enlisted. I dont know his reasons, just putting it out there in case anyone knows him.

Oh,ok. you didnt mention the national guard. You said he left for basic Training. whcih ives the impression of active duty. The Guard is a whloe differrent ball game.

A lot of people (not saying your DCC) dont realize that you have to be an officer to be a pilot and they "just" enlist" cause theythink thats the wayto get there. Then once they get in and realize they aent going to be a pilot just yet, thsy get discouraged. Then thy eventualyy get frustrated and turned off of the military and forget the whole officer-pilot thing. Its tragic. I have seen it too many times.

I have a friend from church whose son went that route with the Air Guard.  Sharp guy.  He's at UPT right now.  When he got back from basic and tech school he decided that he wanted to become a pilot.  It took him a bit longer since the unit was transitioning from C-130s to C-5s.  Once the chain of command saw that he was a quality airman, he just had to wait his turn.  It's pretty competitive.
