Title: Homeland Security Bill Passes House (
Post by: RiverAux on May 12, 2009, 11:35:30 PM
According to a press release from Rep. Dent, HR 1178, the 2009 CAP Homeland Security study bill has passed the house. http://dent.house.gov/PressReleases.aspx?prid=321

The actual text of what has been approved isn't up on the internet yet, but I doubt it is much different than what we've discussed.

While progress, remember that it passed the House last year and died.  The Senate version of this bill, S. 704 has not moved since it was introduced on March 25th and only has a single co-sponsor (Sen. Burr of NC).

Why a new post.  Lets move it to the the other thread.  That way we don't have two ongoing discussions on the same subject??  Glad to hear it moved non the less!

Because your thread was started to discuss the 2007 bill based on the initial post.

^ Same bill, was my understanding.  It just left committee when I posted, now it passed the house.  Same title is my understanding....no??

I don't care either way, I was just curious....more so if there were two different bills presented by the same gentleman.

I doubt it will go anywhere, more hopeful, but I do understand it has little if any backing.

The bill is now in front of the Senate Committee on HLS and Govt Affairs

http://hsgac.senate.gov/public/

The members of the committee should be contacted to ask for support. They won't vote on it if there is no public support.

If your local Senator is not on the committee, call him or her and ask them to co sponsor the bill.

This of course applies only if you think it is a good idea ;D

FYI, no movement on this bill since it went to the Senate in May.  Still in Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs.

My Senator's office sent an e-mail thanking me for requesting his support of this bill and promising he would advocate for it in his committee.   ;)  Must mean it's not going anywhere. >:D

Edited because I hate bad grammar.  ;D

I took a look into the US Senate and found this:

Now what I don't know is if this is the same bill that is mentioned above.

This has all of the relevant answers to your questions.  It will be apparent that Senator Bennett (who was a surprising apppointment to fill the seat of current Interior Secretary Ken Salazar) and his staff don't quite know what's going on with the bill, but hopefully this prodded someone into looking at it. ;D

Dear Shad:

Thank you for contacting me regarding H.R.1178. I appreciate hearing from you.

First, I would like to thank you for your service in the Civil Air Patrol. I am a strong supporter of the Civil Air Patrol and its mission to provide essential emergency services and educational programs to Americans. The invaluable contributions of the Civil Air Patrol make Colorado and our country a safer place.

Introduced by Representative Charles Dent, H.R.1178 directs the Comptroller General of the United States to study and report to the Secretary of Homeland Security and specified congressional committees on the functions and capabilities of the Civil Air Patrol to support the homeland security missions of state, local, and tribal governments and the Department of Homeland Security. H.R.1178 was passed by the House of Representatives on May 12, 2009 and is now under consideration by the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.

As a member of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, I am committed to ensuring that the Department of Homeland Security has the resources it needs to protect our borders and keep our country safe. The services provided by the Civil Air Patrol are an important resource for the Department of Homeland Security, and I will keep your concerns in mind as our Committee considers this important piece of legislation.

I value the input of fellow Coloradans in considering the wide variety of important issues and legislative initiatives that come before the Senate. I hope you will continue to inform me of your thoughts and concerns.

For more information about my priorities as a U.S. Senator, I invite you to visit my website at http://bennet.senate.gov/. Again, thank you for contacting me.

Sincerely,

Michael Bennet
United States Senator

At least he sent a response.  Last representative I sent an e-mail to, the message bounced because his House e-mail box was full.  :D

Don't think I received a response to any messages I sent... Maybe your letter was worded better.  Care to share?

I would be happy to, except I can't seem to locate my copy of it. ;D

Looking at the wording of the Senator's letter, it seemed vaguely familiar and I wanted to compare to my original letter to see how much the staffer stole -- then discovered that I didn't have a copy anymore.

I basically indicated the bill number, that it was in the Senator's committee, that I was a CAP member interested in its passage, and a brief summary of what the bill proposed to do.

Note that he didn't actually say he was going to support it.  Basically a form letter, but a nice one nevertheless.  Well, probably not a form as I doubt they've had enough public contacts about that bill to warrant a form letter, but lets say it was a typical response from a staffer whose politician hasn't taken a stand on a particular piece of legislation.

Yeah I noticed that. :)  Typical politico-speak, but for a guy running for re-election soon, good job actually corresponding with your constituents (unlike my idiot Congressman).

Seemed to be better then the typical form letter.

Then again I've seen people send in letters for issue X, and get a thank-you letter in which the congress-critter expressed his agreement with about against X.

(Replace X with -X for letters sent in against issue X, the same thing can happen).
