Title: Intercept mission causes hoopla in NH
Post by: RiverAux on April 30, 2009, 09:30:22 PM
Well, a joint CAP-Air NG intercept training mission in NH freaked a bunch of people out, or at least made them mad about the noise of what was apparently a low-level exercise.

Never been involved in one of those, but always had assumed that they would be done  at a fairly high altitude.

I thought that the comments from the readers were better than the story itself.

Not necessarily a high altitude. After all, your intercept target won't be just sluffing along at FL150...

Although I'm not getting why MA Wing might have been flying this one, unless it was coordinated between MA CAP & the MA ANG and they just happened to decide to fly it over Claremont.

(The AF probably doesn't think twice about state borders like CAP does.. I mean, heck, in like 10 minutes they can be over about 5 states up here...)

Bahhhhhhh! Cardinal sin!

*flight levels don't begin until FL180*  :P

That always cracks me up though. People who moved into a house near an airport, knowing it was there (and has probably been there 3x as long as their house is) and do nothing but complain about the noise.

Because the MA crews didn't want to get complaints in their own state.

Yes at least they weren't stupid comments

104FW had a fly over in the Boston area last year & had to burn off some fuel (to land safely at home base), so decided to hit the afterburners pretty hard over the Worcester MA area.  It was IFR weather conditions so no one could see the aircraft.  Police were inundated with calls by the public scared out of their witts.

Although busy at work in my office, with my radio scanner with a little bitty antenna on the back, I readily monitored the F15's climb out & cruise altitude before they descended    (that's what's so great about aviation monitoring, higher altitudes make radio comms easy to monitor).

BTW that airport is close to the Yankee Military Operating Area, where the 104 FW trains, so that's probably why the ran the intercept mission up there.

Just buy a "high end" radio scanner (capable of monitoring the military UHF aero range 225-400 mhz) and get a subscription to "Monitoring Times" magazine, as well as look at  www.radioreference.com  and this can be another exciting aspect of monitoring radio communications (besides typical public safety, utilities, etc & civilian aeroband)

+100

I grew up under an approach to PVD (before stage III noise reduction).  And now  lined up with an SFZ runway. I've always liked the sound ;D I always want to ask "Did you know the airport was there before you bought the house?"

Flight levels don't begin until FL180, in North America! It's different in many other parts of the world...

Cool.  I was driving down I-89 and saw the jets flying patterns around KLEB.  Was wondering what they were up to. :)
