Title: Kudos to the CAPTALK Forum
Post by: Major Carrales on March 16, 2009, 06:10:33 PM
Over the past few years many CAPTALK members have odne their best to self-police the forum.  Oh, there have been times where civility failed...those old "Funny Uniform" threads and a few dogpiles.  The occasional new CAPTALKER who thinks that this forum runs like a "smattering post" of all the worst of CAP.

All that being said, I have been visiting several "military" forums...on one I read a group totally dump on a member.  In another, I read all sorts of profane writings.  In still another I saw CAP chewed up and spit out.  It made me angry that people who I hold in high regard, our verterans and active duty, coudl speak so disrespecfully towards eachother and towards, basically, everyone.

I have also been a frequenter of political forums...both LIBERAL and CONSERVATIVE.  Since my politics lies in the center, I have been showered with all sort of insults and agendism.

While I have had my criticism of the Moderation here at CAPTALK and clashed with many of you over the years...I am glad to say that it has never reached that level here.  There are only a few "tools" at this forum that are well calibrated by the overwhelming majority of persons of civility.

I have been, at times, told that taking the "moral highground" is annoying and that dogpiles, ad hominem attacks and basic unharmony is the modus operandi of such forums.  I refuse to allow this forum to dive to that level.

Thanks to all how help maintain the civility of this forum.  It can be very helpful...may it never truly cease to be so.

Ah yes, the military forums.  They can be entertaining.  You can't be of the thin skinned sort when you enter into some, even the Air Force ones.  But then again, you can't be thin skinned in the military.

I mostly use them for research or to answer questions, but you get your occasional tool show up, just like CAP Talk, that wants to spout off their expertise on something they know nothing about.  Worst kind are the young folks who show up telling us how it is in the military and they haven't graduated high school.  Some of them are probably CAP cadets  :-X

The situation where people clash, really needs to be take to PM.  In PM the need be to "theatrical" is diminished and the issues can be resolved.

That's the thing, they aren't as serious as CAP Talk.  In fact, I'd say they're more for entertainment value than valid discussions.  Take www.afforums.com for instance.  You'll find polls about where you get your hair cut and topics like "S. African Gangs' Cure for Lesbians".  Yes, I just looked for an example and that was the #1 topic.  This forum is run by an AD SMSgt.  If not, a CMSgt.

People in the military are human, just like everybody else.

While this is true we are only human the military...errr atleast I'll say with the Army is a big..........."manhood" mesuring game for many.  While they may not know a thing about what they are talking about they if they can insult you or make you look dumb somehow they win.  You may have it written out in a regulation the answer but again who's is bigger tends to be a them in the Army Community as I am sure it is present in the other services.

I can agree with you Maj C, I go on a Aircraft Specific forum with my real job.  Was in a discussion and was told by a SPC that I was a huge idiot and la la la la about something.  Little did he realize that his picture is part of his profile and what unit he was in.  Sad day for him it was my sister unit and the a few days later I found myself having to go over there for work and ask the SPC to show me in the manuals how something was suppose to work by the theory regarding what the forum was talking about.  He was unable to back up his thought from the forum.  That is when I "encouraged" him to think about how he talks to others on a military forum with out haveing the correct information.  He was lucky it was my and not the CPT he was disrespctful to as well.  that would have been fun for him having two of us show up.
