I am thinking of putting some of the basic GTM3 task on DVD like an instructional video. The main reason for putting it on video is for standardized and knowledge base training.
I have seen GTM teach directly from the GT manual very effectively but that
is all it is, telling you what the book says. I feel that making an instructional
video would expand the knowledge base of trainees and trainers in a shorter amount of time. The learning curve would be shorter.
Watching the video WOULD NOT be a substitution for training by a qualified
trainer and the participation in the practice missions.
My vision for the use of the video is this type of scenario.
Training at the squadron for GTM is taking forever. Instructors and cadets
aren't in attendance at the same time. Hand out the video to everyone in
training. If the cadets miss that weeks training then they review it during
the week. A Saturday training event to sign off the task is planned. Everyone should be on the same page regarding task. The cadets and
trainers are able to accomplish that days training without playing catchup,
wasting valuable time and resources. Everyone STILL has to be evaluated
and has to be signed off.
Okay, you say you can read the task in the book. The video would show
hands on instructions for the task that may be more difficult
to understand by reading only.

I think there are some GT tasks that could be demonstrated quite well on video.

Please don't impose and equate the limitations in your AOR with an assumption this is a universal problem.
Fix the problem with the scheduling locally.
Why aren't the instructors and
cadets trainees in the same place at the same time? Fix that instead of reinventing the wheel.

You mean quite well on the video?

I'm sort of surprised it hasn't been done before.
I have been considering doing this and placing the videos onto Youtube. It might make for a nice collaborative project, with different units teaching different tasks/subjects.
I remember working at a McDonald's in high school. They would have me watch training videos (how to make fries, basic burgers, salads, etc, etc). The videos were a great way to allow someone to get up to speed without trying to schedule a trainer. The videos also allowed me to get thorough (not rushed or haphazard) training from an expert.
I think video training would be great.
My general take on using videos to teach ANYTHING at all is to not do it. That being said, ES stuff can get very technical, and it can be difficult to find a local expert who actually knows and understands this stuff. A video could be a very good tool in our toolbox.

Wildland fire and the NWCG just started putting basic wildland fire S130/S190 this year on DVD.
As I understand, 12 modules, test after each and a 1 day field session with either the agency or approved FD's or VFD's
I say go for it. What ever can help this "tired" organization....
If we are all calling online testing forward thinking and using advanced technology.........why not a DVD for field training??

small budget.
What topics would be of interest to the members at large?
Would it be an OPSEC violation to put our training on YouTube?

I am not trying to reinvent the wheel. WIWAC we didn't have the
training like we have now for GT. I do remember when the GT badge came out. If you had a pink ES card you got to wear the GT badge. In those days reinventing the wheel happened all the time. Life doesn't always
allow cadets and SM to be at meetings all the time, if I could get everyone
their at the same time I certainly would!
I stated that the Training DVD would get people up to speed in a shorter amount of time to save time and resources. Also, if a member could learn
or review training at their own pace wouldn't that benefit that individual and the unit? Regarding imposing my limitations... in my AOR....as a leader
in this organization using technology to train my people or any other member in the most efficient and least expensive way possible IS taking
responsibility and leading.

All our specific training requirements are posted in the open on the NHQ web site, so I don't think this would be an issue. Nothing secret about how to do ground sar.
In the spirit of not being an "inhibitor", I'll grant a lot of what we do could be at least demonstrated easily via video.
Using a compass, hygiene, setting up a shelter, dog teams, keeping a log, lots of it. No opsec issues here, and as mentioned the tasking is still the safety valve.
There are videos that show how to pick locks, fix cars, modify Nerf guns, and a host of other more technical things than anything in the GT curriculum.
I was talking to a professional in the field of video production and it cost a lot of money to put together a professional quality video. I am paying for this, so the amount shooting and multiple camera shots will be limited.

I really like this idea. I'd offer to help, but I don't know much of what I can do, since I don't know much about video stuff. I can do some web stuff related to it, probably. I think that you should talk to the national video people - look at the possibility of getting it recorded, edited, and produced right. We need to take advantage of the developments in technology. They address MANY of the things we, as a large primarily volunteer organization need. We are being left in the dust compared to other non-profits of our size.

I hate the fact that I am "supporting" an idea I don't really like, but on YouTube you can ask questions - you simply post a comment or a response video.
The "just watch the video" issue is negated by the practical tasking, although with that said there are commanders all over the place that think Level 1 is completed online. ::)

The video would be for DEMONSTRATION purposes only.
The video would SUPPLEMENT real training and hands on class work.
The video WOULD NOT seek to reinvent the wheel.
The video DOES NOT negate practical tasking and the PRACTICE MISSIONS
I will start with the basic GTM3 task and work my way toward more advanced task. I will have to write scripts/story boards. I will get back to this board when I have some task on DVD.
