I incorporate the design of the logo into a chess board format. I have attached a picture of Maj Gen Courters before I put her name on it.

History is not made just of CAPs days gone-bye. It is a culture that is defined by missions, protocols, duties, uniforms, respect, and successes. Historians codify these achievements. We should take pride and pleasure in these things.

Many volunteer organizations, NGOs, and governmental service bodies would kill for this cultural significance.

As historians we embrace and notify the larger society of this service.

FEMA wishes they have, what we have. Homeland Security wishes they have, what we have. To all those working on the story of the Civil Air Patrol we should don our flight caps and say, Thanks.

If you don't know what the CAP has done... you are poorer for it. Accordingly, CAP will be poorer though this ignorance.

As historians, ours is not the most well known mission in CAP. Ours is not the most recognized or understood mission... BUT, we pump blood into the body of men and women summoning themselves to stand amongst their predecessors and fill the shoes to accomplish the mission. We provide the footprint of those shoes.

If we do nothing else... we show the pride, raise the flag, and call the members to serve.
Pat our historians on the back, not the head, and say THANK YOU! We are not lesser lights among
greater duties... we are light.
Maj. Shaw! THANK YOU , SIR!

Good job.

Way to go Maj. I have a long way to go to get to your level.
I have been trying to get my squadron's program off of the ground, and am just now seeing the efforts pay off. I have only been at this for a year and a half though. ;D

The following is not met to be competitive to Maj. Shaw's work but additive. These are
the articles generated from a 15 month History Research Project on; Flight 217: The Largest Single Mission
Save in CAP History. The event occurred 30 years ago. These articles are from the past 8 months.

History can be a great resource for AEX, PA, and CAP Morale.

Press Coverage of Flight 217 in 2008/2009. Here's a partial list:

13. There were 3 events regarding this incident and story for which I was project officer:
13a) Sept. 6th 2008 reunion and debris recovery at Buffalo Pass featuring Matt Kotts and members of the CAP ES Team telling the story of Flight 217 at the crash site. Eight members from Thompson Valley and BSS Squadrons listened to the story and retrieved debris for the projects below.
13b) Dec. 6th 2008 a Commemoration including 55 invited guests was conducted and the full story of Flight 217 was told as each survivor and rescuer was able to tell their portion of the story before and among others of the Flight 217 family.
13c)  Mar. 5th 2009: The Flight 217 Exhibit was unveiled at Wings Over the Rockies. In attendance were survivors, rescuers, members of the Black Sheep Senior Squadron, the press, and CAP invitees. If you'd like to see this exhibit -- the location is here: http://www.wingsmuseum.org/

If you read any of my replies on this thread -- I am describing that on (many) occasion(s) there is natural alignment between Aerospace Education, Public Affairs, and Historians.

To that point, the Story tellers of CAPs story should look for these natural alliances, should seek these common stories, should share the load to build a bigger framework with more publicity, public awareness, public education, etc. We may have different job titles... however in the real truth we are doing the same basic job" Public Outreach through Storytelling.

Ed and Jim

You're both doing amazing work.  I was sitting behind the CAP historian at the winter boards and didn't get a chance to talk to him.  I'm really impressed and grateful that you two guys are doing so much work.  As is being discussed on another thread we need to be in touch with our history to understand what our culture is and why it is that way.

I'm an intelligence officer and an amateur genealogist -  I wish I did quality work like that.

I've never found a live human doing SAR. I find them all the time doing PA and history.
So thanks Gunner C.

Some days it feels just like a find and occasionally a SAVE. I found an old uniform from Gen.  John F Curry in a locker at our old Headquarters Office. With the regalia gone it looked just like every other WW2 Uniform we have. However it looked nicer as if it was custom made, bespoke as the British call it. John Curry liked a Saville Row uniform now and again... and this is it! I didn't know it for 18 months but now I've verified it... 40R, in the same uniform as his official 2nd Air Force portrait... with a mark on the left sleeve where extra buttons were removed. Yeah, that made my day.

Jack Curry has been a great friend as I study him from afar. I never met the man. He's dead of course, but the work is exciting, the revelations amazing, and the days in doing the research on such a great guy are a kick.

While I like to attach the title "Historian" to my name, I'm actually more of just a hoarder and compiler.

You gentelman have the dedication, motivation, resourcefulness and presentation talents to accomplish things as CAP Historians that I could only dream to do someday.

I salute you!

In a goofy moment I declared myself "Heritage Project Officer." I think that I'm the only member of CAP with this designation. I am in my own little hovel of geekiness.

I'm a historian, but for just my squadron. The Wing level requirements seemed make-workish but I needed Wing contacts and resources. So, to her credit, our Chief Of Staff MSgt. Cynthia Smith came up with a title to which my good and patient WG/CC Col. Ed Phelka signed off.

It is these little accommodations that make the work... possible. I can follow a well honed nose for history without tripping over Historian obligations while our Wing Historian, Maj. Susan Wilson, has my six-covered. AND, my six needs covering from time to time.

These are just a few of the people that make the adventure possible. I am in their debt.

My next job is to invade New Mexico. Likely my six will need more covering soon. BUT, it is one of the great stories of CAP and Colorado and New Mexico Wings are all part of it.
